Ardia: Historic Routes, Beaches and History

History and Routes

The historic Camiño Real de Ardia was restored by the municipality of O Grove. In Ardia, a municipal route also leads to the intersection with the Camiño Vello de Ardia. Both routes connect the present-day landscape with different traces of the area’s history: the Camiño Real has been restored as a historic route, while the municipal route leads to a specifically named section of the older path. Hikes on historic routes may require checking the current trail conditions in advance.

In the 10th century, the salt pans in nearby Noalla and the Villa Ardea on the island of O Grove were mentioned in connection with King Ordoño and Santiago. Villa Ardea corresponds to present-day Ardia. Thus, in addition to the routes, the former place name and the salt pans of Noalla are also historical references associated with the area.

Maritime Landscape and Viewpoints

For the maritime excursions operated by MARES DO GROVE from O Grove, the ship has a permit to visit the Complejo Intermareal Umia - O Grove. This area is of particular ornithological interest. For maritime excursions, current departure times and possible visiting hours should be checked before the day of travel. In addition to the departure, the possible visiting hours may also be decisive when preparing for such a trip; current times should therefore be checked in advance.

The Mirador Con da Hedra can be reached year-round by car, bicycle or on foot. The route follows a well-paved road and then a small fenced path. For a walking or cycling tour, current trail conditions can be checked before setting out.

Museums, Zoo and Beaches

The Museo da Salgadeira de Moreiras, a museum, is located in the immediate vicinity of Ardia. The Acuario do Grove, a zoo, and two beaches—the Praia da Lanzada and the Praia Mexilloeira—are also located nearby. Museums and zoos may have different opening hours; current times should be checked before visiting.

Culture in the Surrounding Area

The Museo Etnografico del Vino is located in the area around Ardia. Also in the surrounding area are Pazos dos Ulloa, a palace; the Mirador de A Pastora, a viewpoint; and the Pazo de Fefiñáns, another palace. The cultural offerings therefore range from a museum and historic palace complexes to a viewpoint. For visits to museums and palaces, current opening or visiting hours can be checked in advance; for events or special tours, the current dates should also be checked. Palaces may also have special visiting dates; current dates can be checked in advance.
