Discover A Estrada: Romanesque architecture, hiking trails and festivals

A Estrada preserves up to 19 churches dating from the period between the 10th and 13th centuries. The two Romanesque routes consist of two circular walks; the churches feature explanatory panels and videos that can be downloaded via QR code.

Culture

The Museo Manuel Reimóndez Portela presents exhibitions about rural and urban A Estrada, education in the past, games and toys, and everyday life. A small art gallery includes works by artists such as Castelao and Muras. The museum also has a library, a research room and an archive.

The Museo do Pobo Estradense – Manuel Reimóndez Portela is housed in a former municipal slaughterhouse designed in 1924 by the architect Juan Argenti. The Casa das Letras de A Estrada was created by converting the former José Antonio school. It has several reading and study rooms, research rooms, a media library and exhibition areas.

The Pazo de Oca is part of Galicia’s Ruta de la Camelia. Vesacarballa and Serra do Mestre form an ethnographic complex comprising five mills, including a watermill, a sawmill and a bread oven. The Torre de Guimarei is a square tower dating from the 12th century and is currently considered abandoned.

Nature and trails

The Castro de San Miguel is a 287-metre-high rocky outcrop where pottery fragments and the remains of a mill have been found. The Castro de San Miguel is also associated with the Camino de Invierno and the Vía de la Plata. From there, you can see the mountains and the Ulla, which border the A Estrada area.

The PR-G 197 is a 30.30-kilometre circular hiking trail through the parishes of San Xurxo de Codeseda and San Lourenzo de Sabucedo in the municipality of A Estrada. It connects riverside areas, native forests and mid-mountain landscapes. The Rutas do Concello comprise ten hiking trails that begin in the centre of A Estrada.

Monte Cabalar can be reached from A Estrada on foot, by bicycle or by car. The riverside recreation area on the Liñares is a 24,000-square-metre green space with extensive oak woodland, seating, changing rooms, a bar, a children’s play area and a lifeguard service.

The path to the Fervenza de Callobre leads through oak and pine forests, past two mills and across several wooden walkways to a viewpoint. The Fervenza de Callobre is located on the Curantes River, a tributary of the Liñares, which in turn flows into the Ulla. There are two ways to access the Fervenza de Callobre: the upper part of the waterfall or its base. The bridges and wooden walkways around the Fervenza de Callobre have been renovated.

Local life

The centre of A Estrada, including the wine district, Praza da Feira, and Calvo Sotelo and Serafín Pazo streets, is a pedestrian area. The main streets of A Estrada form an open-air shopping centre. The centre has numerous terraces and an extensive wine district.

Festivals and food and drink

A Estrada is known for producing organic cider, the Ruta de la Sidra and the Feria de la Sidra. The various cider houses in A Estrada organise tours throughout the year.

The Festa do Salmón takes place on the third weekend in May. During the Festa do Salmón, bars in A Estrada prepare salmon tapas from Friday onwards; the large tasting takes place on Sunday at the stalls of the Novo Mercado and in the adjoining streets and squares.

The Rapa das Bestas de Sabucedo is recognised as a festival of international tourist interest and has a history spanning more than 400 years. At the Rapa das Bestas de Sabucedo, visitors can join local people in groups to round up the herds of horses.
