Discover O Grove: Coast, Nature and Culture

The Ramsar site Complexo Intermareal Umia-O Grove includes O Grove and covers an area of 2,561 hectares.

The protected area Complexo Ons-O Grove includes the outer coastal section of the O Grove peninsula between Reboredo and San Vicente do Mar.

Nature and Coast

At just under 200 metres, Monte Siradella is the highest point on the O Grove peninsula and offers views of the internationally significant Complexo Intermareal Umia-O Grove wetland.

At 165 metres, Con da Siradella is the highest point in O Grove and has a wooden viewing platform with 360-degree views of the isthmus and A Lanzada beach.

Praia da Lanzada lies on the western side of the O Vao isthmus, a dune belt that turns O Grove into a peninsula; Kentish plovers nest in its sand.

The protected area Complexo Ons-O Grove includes the tidal plain of the Ensenada de O Vao, with the island of A Toxa and the beaches of O Grove.

The protected area Complexo Ons-O Grove is suitable for birdwatching and has both Ramsar and ZEPA designations.

Paths and Walks

Most of the PR-G 115 Ruta do Adro Vello runs through the Complexo Ons-O Grove Natura 2000 protected area.

The PR-G 115 Ruta do Adro Vello follows the coast, passing sandy beaches and the former Salgadeira de Barcela saltworks.

The Sendeiro de Pedras Negras passes numerous coves where seabirds live and nest; it is suitable for birdwatching.

The approved linear hiking route Con Negro PR-G 116 is 3.8 kilometres long and passes through a landscape of rocks, woodland and beaches.

The approximately one-kilometre-long, level Paseo de Beiramar runs from near the O Grove bus station to the bridge to Illa de A Toxa.

Culture and History

The Salgadeiras de Moreiras preserve the structure of a former saltworks characterised by a portico.

At the Adro Vello archaeological site near O Carreiro beach, there are remains of a Roman villa, a salt pan or saltworks, and other historic settlements.

The Salgadeiras de Moreiras includes a museum of fishing and salting that presents elements of maritime life.

The Museo Salazón de Moreiras is an ethnographic museum dedicated to fishing and salting, with more than 1,000 objects.

The Capilla de Conchas de A Toxa was built in 1909 as a church with a Latin-cross floor plan and a single-nave layout, and is completely covered with scallop shells.

Sea and Regional Tradition

At A Lanzada, visitors can go diving, bodyboarding, windsurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding.

At O Grove’s fish and seafood market, the weekday afternoon auction of fish and seafood can be watched free of charge from a designated visitor area.

The Ruta de los Mejillones catamaran trip from the port of O Grove visits mussel farms, uses underwater viewing windows, and includes mussels and a drink.

The Festa do Marisco takes place in O Grove during the first two weeks of October and is recognised as a festival of national tourist interest.

The Aldea de los Grobits on A Toxa features small houses, some partly set into the ground, as well as swings, slides and other play equipment for children.
