Nigrán: Bay, Dunes and Historic Sites

In Nigrán, Playa América and Panxón form a single bay. This bay is 3.5 kilometres long. It is bordered by a protected dune system.

Coast and Nature

The Playa América–Panxón dune system lies between Monteferro and Montelourido. It is divided by the mouth of the Río Muíños. The Espacio Natural de la Ramallosa nature area stretches from the cliffs of Monteferro to the Foz del Miñor. It also includes the Islas Estelas.

The Mirador Monteferro viewpoint is located in Panxón, Nigrán. The viewpoint is situated on the Portuguese Way of St. James.

The Praia América beach is located in the immediate surroundings of Nigrán. Praia do Abra beach is also nearby. Playa Marta beach is likewise located in the immediate surroundings of Nigrán. Playa Baiona beach is also nearby.

History and Culture

The Pazo de Cea is a 16th-century building. As a Bien de Interés Cultural, the building is protected.

The Ruta del Río Muíños passes several watermills. These mills form part of Nigrán's ethnographic heritage.

In Panxón, the remains of a Roman pottery workshop have been preserved on Calle Tomás Mirambell. The surviving elements include walls, paved areas and channels. The remains also include two clay settling basins.

The Torre do Príncipe historic site is located in the immediate surroundings of Nigrán. The Fonte do Pombal historic site is also nearby.

The Fiestas de San Xoán take place in Panxón. They include traditional beach bonfires. They are celebrated from 23 to 25 June.

Museums and Regional Cuisine

The Verbum – Casa das Palabras museum is located in the surroundings of Nigrán. The Museo Real Club Celta de Vigo is also located in the surroundings of Nigrán.

The menus of local restaurants in Nigrán often feature fish and seafood. These include octopus, spider crabs and velvet crabs.

Water Sports

Water sports are available on the beaches on the other side of Monteferro, as well as in Patos, Cañas and Portiño. Activities include windsurfing, bodysurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. There are up to three surf schools in Patos offering courses and rental services.

The coastal locations mentioned are therefore each associated with their own geographical context: the bay of Playa América and Panxón, the dune system between Monteferro and Montelourido, or the beaches on the other side of Monteferro. The Espacio Natural de la Ramallosa nature area also extends across a clearly defined section between the cliffs of Monteferro and the Foz del Miñor.
