Coast and nature

Muros has 25 kilometres of coastline with extensive beaches. The surrounding area includes a protected coastal complex with coastal mountains and cliffs, beaches and dunes, a lagoon, marine areas and riverside woodland; it encompasses the ZEPVN and LIC protection categories within the Natura 2000 network, as well as ZEC. The Ruta da costa highlights the importance of the dune ecosystem, different types of dunes and the adaptations of dune flora. The Ruta do Monte Louro explores geological aspects in the surrounding area, as well as information about the fauna, flora and oral heritage associated with the site.

Culture and architectural history

Vila de Muros is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. In the former parish church of San Pedro de Muros, the restored Capilla de la Gracia is located in the former sacristy and serves as a centre for interpreting the town’s religious heritage. The former collegiate church is the starting point for the guided tour Muros, Vila de Auga e Sal. The Mercado de Abastos is a rectangular building with four storeys and an external two-flight staircase with a masonry balustrade; a skylight was installed to improve the interior lighting. The Capilla de San Xosé is a small private chapel dating from the early 18th century; its stairways illustrate how Muros’s urban structure adapts to the terrain. Casa do Capitán is a Modernist building from the early 20th century.

Maritime heritage

The Centro de interpretación do patrimonio marítimo de Sel is housed in a building that was originally a saltworks, converted into a cannery in 1894 and operated until 1976. The centre presents fishing, shellfish harvesting, historic preservation methods from salting to canning, and traditional boatbuilding in Muros. The houses in Muros are characterised by typical maritime arcades; fishing equipment was formerly repaired and fish salted beneath them. The tidal mill Muíño de Mareas o Pozo do Cachón, also known as A Ponte dos Muíños, dates from the second decade of the 19th century and is considered one of the most important tidal mills in Europe. The Escultura al Marinero Desaparecido is a work by Ramón Conde from 1989 and depicts a woman gazing sadly out to sea.

Food and events

Tortilla Romana is a typical dessert from Muros: a sponge cake filled with cream and covered with caramel. The view of Muros Bay and harbour invites you to take a stroll along the Paseo Marítimo. Since 1988, the Gran Premio de Carrilanas de Esteiro has been held in Esteiro on the 3-kilometre Ramiro García “Gerente” racecourse on the slope of O Maio; the Museo das Carrilanas is also located there. From 10 to 12 July, the XXI Xornadas de Cultura Mariñeira “Muros Mira ao Mar” transform the historic centre and harbour of Muros into a meeting place centred on maritime culture. The programme includes music, cultural heritage, tradition, gastronomy, theatre, street art and activities for all age groups.
