Gondollín: Cultural Heritage and Hiking Trails

Gondollín combines archaeological heritage with distinctive landscapes and a variety of hiking themes. Between A Garea, San Martiño, Pilar and the Pedrouzos River lie specific destinations that bring cultural and natural themes together within a manageable area of interest.

Culture

Castro de Corbelle is listed as archaeological heritage in Gondollín (San Martiño). In A Garea, within the parish of San Martiño de Gondollín, there is also the Igrexa de Gondollín (Parroquial de San Martiño), which is listed as architectural heritage. Also in A Garea and within the same parish is the Mámoa do Cotarelo de Vilariño, which is listed as archaeological heritage. This ensemble is complemented by a parish cemetery and church complex in Gondollín. Castro de Corbelle and the Mámoa do Cotarelo de Vilariño are therefore part of the archaeological heritage, while the Igrexa de Gondollín is listed as architectural heritage. The church buildings and the cemetery and church complex form a separate area within the heritage sites. For a planned visit to the church and cemetery buildings, the applicable opening hours are decisive; archaeological sites can be included separately in the day's itinerary.

Landscape

The Serra do Careón is located in the municipality of Melide. It is designated as a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. A distinctive point associated with this landscape is Coto do Pilar, also known as Coto da Andoriña. The summit is 803 metres high and is the highest point in the province of A Coruña. The landscape also includes Braña da Cruz do Bocelo, which is regarded as a site of great ecological and archaeological importance. Coto do Pilar and Coto da Andoriña refer to the same 803-metre-high summit. The protected area, summit and Braña da Cruz do Bocelo therefore represent different facets of the landscape theme, without the neighbouring terms referring to the same feature. The elevation of 803 metres can be taken into account when planning the timing of a trip to the summit. Before setting out on a hike, the current route conditions and weather for the planned day should be checked. For travelling to and from the area by public transport, current timetables are part of the general preparation.

Hiking

A circular hiking route from Gondollín leads via Pilar. On this route, Pilar is reached at kilometre 3.6. The PR-G 259 hiking trail crosses the road from Garea to Pedrouzos and then descends to the Pedrouzos River. Another route from Gondollín leads through a pine forest. The 3.6-kilometre point, the road crossing and the subsequent descent clearly mark named sections of the route on the PR-G 259. When preparing for this route, particular attention should be paid to the conditions for crossing the road and continuing on to the river. The pine forest belongs to another route from Gondollín and therefore represents a separate itinerary alongside the PR-G 259.
