Dodro – Culture and Landscape in the Lower Ulla Valley

Hiking in the Lower Ulla Valley

In Dodro, hiking trails make it possible to experience the landscape in the lower Ulla Valley. The Ruta Rosalía nos camiños is a circular hiking route approximately 16 kilometres long. Near Lestrobe, this route includes a detour of about ten metres to the Pazo de Hermida. The two places are connected by a shared route name, while the distances specify the extent of the hike and the detour separately.

Chapel and Route Connections

The Capela da Virxe do Bo Parto e do Leite has a Neoclassical main façade. The chapel is 1.2 kilometres from the town hall. It can be reached via the DP-3302 towards Rois. The Capela da Virxe do Bo Parto e do Leite is also located on the Ruta del Mar de Arousa y Ulla. For planning a hike, this building therefore offers both a specific distance and a named road and route connection.

Churches and Cultural Heritage

The Igrexa de San Xián de Laíño is an 18th-century Baroque church. Its interior contains three high-quality altarpieces commissioned in 1764. The Igrexa de Santa María de Dodro is an 18th-century Baroque church. The Cruceiro de Avelán is an ethnographic heritage cross in A Devesa, Dodro. The name and location of the cross are just as much part of its classification as the architectural details of the churches.

Pazos, Towers and Rosalía de Castro

The Pazo de Lestrove in Dodro dates from the 16th to the 18th century. It served as a retreat for the archbishops of Compostela. The Torres de Lestrove, also known as Pazo de Hermida, originally consisted of two medieval defensive towers. Pazo de Hermida thus appears both as the name of the detour near Lestrobe and as the designation of the Torres de Lestrove. Rosalía de Castro spent long periods in the Torres de Lestrove. Lestrove is also represented as a separate place.

Nature and Traces of Earlier Times

A group of eleven mixed hórreos has been preserved in Lavandeira near Imo, most of which date from the 18th century. The rock carvings of Bouza Abadín in Imo date from the Bronze Age, approximately from the period between 1500 and 600 BC. The Bouzabadín rock art site comprises carvings on twelve stones. The Ulla-Deza river system in Dodro is designated as a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 network. The Brañas de Laíño have been included in the Galician Network of Protected Areas.

The geographical references range from Dodro and its districts to individual named buildings. In terms of chronology, these places bring together medieval defensive towers, Baroque churches and structures dating from the 16th to the 18th century with prehistoric rock art; the protected areas in Dodro also add designated landscapes.
