Culture

Castro de Baroña is a fortified Iron Age settlement. It was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. It is designated as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Museo Marea is an ethnographic space. It focuses on exhibiting objects and conveying the stories of the people of Porto do Son and of the maritime culture of other places on the estuary. The exhibitions include fishing equipment, shipwrecks in the region, the maritime occupations of women, and the salt and canning industries. Museo Marea also serves as a tourist information office.

The exhibition combines everyday objects with the working worlds of the estuary. Fishing equipment is displayed alongside the topics of shipwrecks, the maritime occupations of women, and the salt and canning industries. The museum thus brings together material evidence and traditional stories of the people of Porto do Son and other places on the estuary.

At the Porto do Son fish market, octopus bearing the “Polbo en Lonxa” quality seal plays an important role in the auctions. The seal guarantees the quality and origin of the product from one of the six fish markets on the Ría Muros and Noia.

On a tour through the fishing villages of Porto do Son and Portosín, visitors can see several former salting factories. These include those on the islet of Punta Anguieira and those belonging to the Ferrer and Lestón families. The facilities mentioned are among the visible traces of this former maritime industry.

Coast

The fishing port of Porto do Son is located at the innermost part of the Ría Muros and Noia. It marks the maritime boundary between the Rías Baixas and the Rías Altas. Small traditional boats from Porto do Son engage in shellfish gathering and octopus pot fishing.

Porto do Son is one of four ports on the estuary where the route of the Camino de Santiago through the Rías Muros and Noia begins.

Nature

Praia das Furnas has natural pools. They were formed by the erosion caused by wind and water in the slate rock. An accessible promenade makes it possible to walk along Praia das Furnas for its entire length.

The wetland complex of Xuño and Muro has been included in the Natura 2000 network. It is integrated into the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Complexo Húmido de Corrubedo”. There are two birdwatching hides in the area around the lagoons of Xuño and Muro.

On the way

The Senda litoral connects the coast of Porto do Son from north to south. The route extends for approximately 30 km. The Club Náutico de Porto do Son promotes water sports activities, including sport fishing.
