Rois: Hiking Trails, Pilgrimage Routes and Cultural Heritage

Culture and History

The Pazo do Faramello originated from the Real Fábrica de Papel del Faramello, which was founded in 1710. The old mills and their associated equipment can still be visited. Reservations can be made for a guided tour of the Pazo do Faramello; three time slots are available.

Hiking and Trails

The Ruta das Penicias is an 8.5-kilometre circular route with a low level of difficulty that starts and ends at the Church of San Mamede de Rois; a shortened half-route is also possible. The Ruta das Penicias passes through shaded sections along the river and through forests with native trees. Rois's hiking trails are maintained and signposted.

The Ruta do Castro Lupario is a circular route with a low level of difficulty; it comprises a main route and three variants ranging from 3.8 to 4.5 kilometres. The entire site of Castro Lupario can be explored along the Ruta do Castro Lupario; the northern and southern walls are visible and well preserved.

Pilgrimage Routes and Cultural Sites

The Camino Portugués passes through Rois. The Rois variant of the Camino Portugués runs through a pine forest between O Sisto and the hamlet of Angueira de Castro. In the Rois area, the Camino de Santiago por la Ría de Muros-Noia connects the places of Martelo, Codeso, Agrafoxo and Urdilde. The Camino de Santiago por la Ría de Muros-Noia was officially recognised in December 2020; those who choose it as a route to the apostle's tomb can receive the Compostela.

The Igrexa Parroquial de San Mamede de Rois is a religious heritage church in Rois and lies on the Camino Portugués, the Camino Portugués da costa and the Ruta do Mar de Arousa e Ulla. The Cruceiro de Cornes is an ethnographic cruceiro dating from 1765 in Cornes, Rois, on the Camino de Santiago. The Viacrucis de Sorribas is located in Sorribas, Rois, and on the Camino Portugués.

Rivers and Landscape

The Playa Fluvial de Seira on the Río Rois has green areas as well as areas for swimming and fishing. It has a rest area renovated in 2017 with tables and benches, as well as a car park. Along the rivers and streams of Rois are well-preserved riparian forests with alders, willows and other species typical of the Atlantic forest. At the Pazo do Faramello, the Río Tinto, also known as the Angueira, plunges as a waterfall; it is a tributary of the Sar.

In the municipality of Rois, there are opportunities for cycling on lightly trafficked, flat roads, over small passes and steep climbs, as well as on mountain-bike trails along the rivers.

Geographical Location

Rois is located near the AP-9 and the Autovía del Barbanza; the highway between Santiago de Compostela and the Ría de Muros-Noia passes through Urdilde in the northern part of the municipality.

Other destinations include Ferrol, Arcos, A Igrexa, Camariñas, Nemiña, Calo, Pardaces de Arriba and Redonda.
