Barrio da Magdalena is home to an architectural and art-historical ensemble regarded as a landmark of the city. It is characterised by the geometric-rationalist urban planning of the 18th century.

The Museo Naval is housed in an 18th-century building designed by Sánchez Bort. The building formerly served as a barracks for prisoners. The museum permanently displays historical ship models and diving suits. Other objects on permanent display include ship flags, various navigation and cartographic materials, and weapons.

The Museo de la Construcción Naval, also known as Exponav, is housed in an 18th-century industrial hall in the Herrerías building. The Museo de Historia Natural displays the skeleton of an 18-metre-long fin whale. Its exhibits also include a giant squid and rare shark species preserved in conservation fluid.

The Arsenal of Ferrol is a complex of hydraulic works and buildings constructed in the 18th century, regarded as unique in Europe. Castelo de San Felipe is one of the most representative examples of the large bastioned batteries of the 18th century. From there, it offers an excellent view over the estuary.

In Ferrol, urban-planning heritage, historic military architecture, shipbuilding and natural history stand side by side in various forms. Barrio da Magdalena reflects the planning of the district, while the Museo Naval, Exponav and Museo de Historia Natural each present their own collection areas. The Arsenal and Castelo de San Felipe complement these museums with buildings whose origins and functions are closely linked to the history of the city.

Traditions and Art

Holy Week in Ferrol is recognised as a festival of international tourist interest. During the Noche de las Pepitas, on the evening of 18 March, the rondallas take to the streets of Ferrol. The uniformed singing and instrumental groups sing for the women of the city.

The Fiesta de las Pepitas has a history spanning more than 180 years. The Las Meninas de Canido project began in 2008 as an artistic and socially committed initiative by local painter Eduardo Hermida. National and international artists from the fields of painting, graffiti and mural art take part in the event.

Paths and Coast

The Camino Inglés begins in Ferrol and then passes through municipalities such as Narón, Neda, Fene, Cabanas, Pontedeume and Santiago de Compostela. Along the coast of Ferrol, you can go hiking or take cycling tours.

The recommended route through Ferrol’s urban heritage passes through the historic areas of the city and can be completed on foot in one morning.

Cuisine

Barrio da Magdalena is regarded as Ferrol’s most important culinary district, particularly around María and Sol streets. Calle Sol has numerous establishments offering tapas and predominantly maritime local cuisine.
