Playa de la Magdalena is a 1,300-metre-long urban beach with calm waters, suitable for bathing, swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. The Ruta Urbana is a circular route in Cedeira that explores the town’s fishing history, maritime crafts and harbour infrastructure. It can be completed on foot or by mountain bike.

Culture

Castro Sarridal is an Iron Age archaeological site in Cedeira. On the landward side, it is protected by two walls with associated ditches; settlement has been confirmed from at least the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The Museo Mares de Cedeira preserves Cedeira’s tangible and intangible maritime heritage. In the Middle Ages, Cedeira was one of Galicia’s important whaling ports.

Castillo de la Concepción, also known as Fortín de la Concepción, is an 18th-century military fortress on Punta Sarridal that has watched over the Ría de Cedeira since 1747. The associated interpretation centre features ship reproductions, replicas of contemporary military clothing, weapons and reconstructed rooms. The Do Porto á Ermida de Santo Antón de Corveiro walking trail passes over Punta Sarridal, where excavated remains of a castro include a Pedra Formosa, or ritual sauna.

In Cedeira’s old town stands the Igrexa de Santa María do Mar, a Gothic church from the 15th century. It has three naves, a polygonal apse, a dome above the main chapel and star vaults in the central nave.

The annual Rapa de las Bestias, also known as Curro de la Capelada, takes place at Pena Toxosa. It involves rounding up the livestock, trimming the manes, marking the stallions, taming them and holding horse races.

Nature and Coast

The Serra da Capelada features dunite and serpentinite outcrops as well as eclogites as part of its geological heritage. The Acantilados de Herbeira rise to around 620 metres above sea level and are considered the highest cliffs on the European mainland.

San Antonio de Corveiro offers a viewpoint over the entrance to the Ría de Cedeira, as well as a recreational area equipped with benches and tables in a pine grove. In 2009, the Ría de Cedeira was designated a Reserva Marina de Interés Pesquero to preserve biodiversity and promote sustainable fisheries management.

Cuisine

Fresh fish and fresh seafood form the basis of Cedeira’s traditional cuisine. Dishes include Rape Cedeiresa, stuffed squid, bonito in sauce and hake in green sauce. Cedeira’s culinary traditions also include percebes and a puff pastry pie filled with ingredients such as bonito, salt cod with raisins, conger eel, scallops or octopus.
