Nantón – Mámoas, Petroglyphs and San Pedro de Nantón
The area of A Piolla lies in the parish of San Pedro de Nantón. A Piolla contains one of the largest concentrations of Mámoas in the municipality of Cabana de Bergantiños. The Mámoas date from the Megalithic period, or Stone Age.
The A Piolla petroglyph is one of the few examples of its kind from the Bronze Age in the Bergantiños region. This small group also includes the petroglyphs of Corme and O Roncudo.
Culture
The Church of San Pedro de Nantón is a rural Baroque church dating from the 18th century. It also preserves a 16th-century apse. The church houses three altarpieces. These belong to the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. If you would like to visit the church, visiting hours are determined by the times of religious services. The service schedule is therefore the relevant timing reference for a visit to the church; visiting hours do not constitute a separate framework from it.
The historic Molino de Nantón mill was once powered by electricity. Its former use of electricity is therefore part of the site's historical record and not a description of its current operation.
The hórreo in A Palleira is considered the largest in Bergantiños. Its construction is described either as two hórreos joined together or as an original hórreo with six pairs of feet. In the second possibility, the original hórreo was extended with another hórreo with four pairs of feet. The two possibilities described therefore refer both to the joining of two structures and to the extension of an older hórreo.
The Castro de Anido preserves defensive remains on its northwest, east and southwest sides. Its fortifications have been severely affected by mechanised agriculture. The surviving remains and the damage to the fortifications thus form part of the description of the same castro.
Paths and Traditions
Route 8, “Del Vao al Castro de Anido por Camafreita”, runs through the parish of Nantón. Its course is therefore located within the parish of Nantón, while the old path is described in the following context as a historic transport route.
An old path in the parish of Nantón was used by muleteers known as “xalleiros”. These muleteers collected clay from Buño. Farmers used the same path to transport sand from A Insua to their fields. The tradition therefore refers to different transporters and transported goods: clay was collected from Buño, while sand was taken from A Insua to the fields.
Processions used to take place at the Fuente del Carmen near the new cemetery. During these processions, the brotherhood offered bundles of flax and money as offerings. These processions form part of the former use of the Fuente del Carmen and are associated with the brotherhood and its two offerings.
Geographical Setting
The C-552 runs from A Coruña to Fisterra. At its southern edge, the road touches the municipal area. It passes through A Piolla and Nantón. A Piolla and Nantón are thus situated along the described route of the C-552.
Exit 53 from the AG-55 motorway, named A Pedra-Nantón, leads via the C-552. A turn-off in A Ameixenda leads to the Church of San Pedro de Nantón. The road references named thus form the described sequence from the AG-55 via the C-552 and A Ameixenda to the church.
Other places include Condomiña, Sobrado, Verdes, Miñortos, Tordoia, Arzúa, Curtis and Andeade.
