Nature

Curtis is part of the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve, which was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2013. Various routes for hiking and cycling lead through forests, along rivers, across meadows and through villages. The Ruta do Mendo runs from Seixo de Abaixo to O Castro and is 1.5 kilometres long. The Río Mandeo route runs from Brixaría to Abeledo and is 6 kilometres long. The Ruta do Mendo is shorter than the Río Mandeo route. The section of the route passing through Curtis is part of the Camino del Norte, also known as the Camino Cantábrico; the section of the Camiño Norte passing through Curtis is almost 23 kilometres long. The Camino section adds an additional trail stretch of almost 23 kilometres to the landscape of Curtis. For the routes, the starting point, destination and stated length are part of the specific planning of a hiking or cycling tour; current trail conditions and transport timetables can be checked before setting out.

History

The Iglesia de Santaia is documented as early as before the 9th century and was rebuilt in the 10th century by San Pedro de Mezonzo. The Iglesia de Nosa Sra. dos Remedios is a 10th-century church built to Christianise a site associated with Celtic rites. Next to this church stands the Carballo da Nosa Señora, a centuries-old oak tree that local tradition associates with an apparition of the Virgin of Los Remedios.

Culture

The Casa-Museo María Antonia Dans is located in the house and studio in Curtis where the painter María Antonia Dans lived. It is Galicia’s first house museum dedicated to a Galician female painter. The Centro Etnográfico de Teixeiro presents and interprets the cultural and ethnographic heritage of the Mandeo Basin. The Centro Etnográfico de Teixeiro has minimum opening hours: Tuesday to Friday in the mornings and afternoons, and Saturday and Sunday mornings; it is closed on Mondays and public holidays. The current opening hours should be checked before travelling to the Centro Etnográfico, as the available visiting period depends on the day of the week and time of day.

Cuisine

The Nabiza and Queso de Curtis gastronomic route offers tastings of both products prepared in various recipes at local restaurants. The Curtis Mercado Comarcal comprises more than 150 stalls selling local food and handicraft products. The XXVI Exaltación dos Cogomelos in Curtis highlights the region’s local wealth of mushrooms and gastronomic tradition.
