Neda: Bread Tradition, River Valleys and Camino Inglés

In Neda, bread is considered an art, a cultural heritage and a tradition. The recipes are passed down from grandparents to grandchildren while also being continuously developed. The Festa do Pan de Neda was referred to as the 35th edition. As part of the 2025 Festa do Pan programme, Neda offered an interpretive tour of Muíño do Carrizo on 6 September 2025. The tour was free of charge and limited to a fixed number of participants.

History and Historic Centre

In the mid-19th century, Muíño do Carrizo was initially a paper mill. It was later converted into a grain mill, which remained in operation until the 1980s. The building’s historical transformation thus extends from paper production and grain milling to the more recent past. The historical use of Muíño do Carrizo extends beyond a single era: both paper production and grain processing are part of its past. The tour through Neda’s historic centre also includes the riverside promenade. The riverside promenade is therefore part of that historic-centre circuit, which explores the historic area of Neda.

River Landscape

The municipality of Neda lies in a valley formed by the Belelle River. To the north, it extends as far as the banks of the Grande de Jubia River and its tributary, the Castro. In its middle course, the Belelle River forms a deep valley. Lush landscapes surround the waterfall there.

Culture

The 18th-century church of Santa María de Neda is located on the Camino Inglés pilgrimage route. The sacred building is therefore characterised both as a church from this century and by its location on the Camino Inglés. The historic centre and riverside promenade are combined in a circular tour, while Santa María de Neda is located on the pilgrimage route.

Paths and Viewpoints

The route to Fervenza do Belelle runs through the municipalities of Neda and Fene. It begins at the car park next to the Pazo de Isabel II. The Pazo de Isabel II was a former textile factory. A signposted path leads to the Viladonelle viewpoint at Fervenza do Belelle. This route includes steps next to the hydroelectric power station. The paths also connect various points of reference, from the car park at the former factory building via the Viladonelle viewpoint to the endpoint of the hiking route at the Pazo de Isabel II. The route passes through Neda and Fene. The Viladonelle viewpoint is located at Fervenza do Belelle, and the Río Belelle hiking route ends at the Pazo de Isabel II. The Pazo de Isabel II is therefore named as the endpoint of the hiking route; by contrast, the route to Fervenza do Belelle begins at the car park next to this former factory building.

Nature

The Parque Micolóxico do Río Belelle is considered the only mycological park in Galicia.
