Nebra: Igrexa de Santa María, Mills and Festivals

Culture

Nebra is home to the Igrexa de Santa María de Nebra, an 18th-century church. Its floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross. The most striking element is a tower consisting of three building sections arranged one above the other, rising above the structure; it is crowned by a small dome.

The Route de Caveiro e Aguieira highlights the surroundings of the Igrexa de Santa María de Nebra. It also showcases the beautiful stone Stations of the Cross in Mallán and the mills along the do Vilar River. The do Vilar River flows through Castrallón and Foloña. The church, Stations of the Cross and mills are therefore different points of interest along the same route. The three stops combine sacred architecture, the Stations of the Cross and historic milling technology along a shared route.

The cultural landscape also includes the Pazo de Nebra, located in O Pazo in the parish of Nebra (Santa María). It is associated with the Caamaño and Sotomayor family. The Pazo de Nebra is regarded as an important seat of the local nobility in the history of Porto do Son.

Festivals

At the Festa da Valvanera de Nebra, the Santo Encontro takes place on the third Saturday in September. Valvanera is celebrated on the third Tuesday in September. Both dates are part of the festival, but differ in their weekday and their position within September. When planning dates, two different weekdays in the same month must be taken into account.

Landscape

The Humanización de los rueiros de Nebra improves paths and lighting in order to restore the traditional character of the village. Paths and lighting are the two specific areas covered by this measure.

The Museo da memoria mariñeira, a museum, is located in the immediate vicinity of Nebra. Monte Diraite, a mountain, is also nearby. Miradoiro da Curota, a viewpoint, is additionally located in the surroundings of Nebra.

Surroundings

Castro de Baroña is located in the surroundings of Nebra and is considered both a castle and a historic site. Pazo de Goiáns, a palace, is also located in the same area. Thus, the wider surroundings include both a site regarded as a castle and historic site and a palace.

The surroundings of Nebra also include Playa Sartana and Playa de Escarabote, both beaches. Together with the nearby Monte Diraite, mountain and beach destinations are therefore part of the area mentioned.

Getting to the Church

From Porto do Son, the Igrexa de Santa María de Nebra can be reached via the C-550 towards Noia. After 3.2 km, turn right at a junction signposted Nebra; the turn-off leads to the village and the church.
