Portosin: Fishing Port, Pilgrimage Route and Hiking Trail

The fishing port of Portosín is the base of one of Galicia’s largest purse-seine fleets. As an important landing port for blue fish, it contributes to the maritime character of the town, with visible port activity centred around fishing.

Culture and Port Life

At the port and the fish market hall in Portosín, visitors can observe the work of those employed in the maritime sector. This includes the arrival of the boats, the unloading of fresh fish and seafood, and their sale at the fish market. The individual activities are directly connected with the port and the fish market hall, making fishing visible as a tangible part of the townscape.

For tapas, the area around Praza do Curro near the port is suitable in Portosín. The port, fish market hall and this square thereby bring together different facets of a stay: maritime work, fresh produce and a named area for tapas.

Maritime Pilgrimage Route

The Real Club Náutico de Portosín is a significant stop on the Travesía Náutica Xacobea, a maritime route of the Way of Saint James. The route combines a sea passage with an overland route and takes pilgrims from Portosín by land to the cathedral. Its course therefore comprises a maritime stage followed by the journey overland.

Hiking Route

The route “A GAFA Y PORTOSÍN” is designated for hiking. It is 11.66 kilometres long and begins and ends at the roundabout by the Consultorio Portosín. This roundabout is therefore both the designated starting and finishing point of the hike. For a designated hiking route, its length and starting and finishing points serve as the basis for the temporal and spatial planning of a day of hiking.

Cultural History in the Surrounding Area

The Museo da memoria mariñeira, a museum, is located in the vicinity of Portosin. Castro de Baroña is also nearby and is considered a castle. Pazo de Goiáns is a palace in the surrounding area, while the Centro Arqueolóxico do Barbanza is another museum.

Landscapes

Monte Diraite, a mountain, is located in the immediate vicinity of Portosin. Isla Quiebra, an island, is also nearby. The surrounding area also contains Miradoiro da Curota, a viewpoint, and Monte Castelo, a mountain.
