Discover Oroso: Trails, River Landscape and Cultural Heritage

Oroso combines impressive trails with the Tambre River and a multifaceted history. The Ponte Sigüeiro, built over the Tambre or Tamara River, plays a special role. One of its arches was built in the 14th century on the orders of Fernán Pérez de Andrade. The Pazo de Meimixe and the Casa Grande dos Somoza are also two 18th-century buildings among the town’s historic landmarks.

Trails and River Landscape

The Vía Verde Compostela-Tambre-Lengüelle runs for 26.67 kilometres between Oroso and Cerceda. The section in Oroso is just over 7 kilometres long and suitable for hikers and cyclists of all ages. Its notable structures include a 207-metre-long tunnel and a viaduct over the Tambre River. Current trail conditions should be checked before setting out on a hike or bike ride. The Tambre also shapes specific excursion destinations away from the Vía Verde. The Área Recreativa A Penateixa is a recreational area on the right bank of the river. Culture and History

Among the older traces is the Castro de Vilalbarro, the only well-preserved castro in Oroso. The Estación de Garga complements this historical picture as a no-longer-used railway station building that has retained its charm. The bridge, manor houses, castro and railway station do not represent the same era: they range from the medieval arch of the Ponte Sigüeiro and the 18th-century buildings to the later history of the railway.
