Culture and History

The Ponte Sigüeiro has five arches. One of them is a Gothic pointed arch commissioned by Fernán Pérez de Andrade in the 14th century. The Camino Inglés crosses the Ponte de Sigüeiro over the Tambre River before entering the municipality of Santiago de Compostela.

A well-known battle took place near the Ponte Sigüeiro in 1846. On one side were troops supporting President Ramón María Narváez; on the other were forces commanded by Colonel Miguel Solís.

Trails and River Landscape

The Ruta do Tambre begins and ends at the Praza da Foca in Sigüeiro. The circular route is 10,240 m long, is considered a route of natural interest and runs along the right bank of the Tambre River. The Ruta do Camiño Real ends at the Ponte de Sigüeiro on the border with Santiago de Compostela. It is 11,140 m long and is classified as easy.

In the “Sigüeiro” fishing area on the river, anglers can pursue their sport. The Carboeiro recreational area is a large green space of more than 60,000 m² on the Carboeiro River in the centre of Sigüeiro. The area includes a leisure space with native trees.

Illa do Refuxio is a natural island in the middle of the Tambre River. Two concrete footbridges lead to the island. There is a river bathing area with a small waterfall.

Penateixa is an open recreational area bordered by rows of alder and oak trees. From the Praza da Foca in Sigüeiro, Penateixa can be reached via the provincial road CP-3801 towards Frades; the turn-off is signposted 1.5 km from the town.

Orientation on Site

CEICI has its own premises in the municipal cultural centre of Sigüeiro. It is a municipal initiative for sharing knowledge about the English Way. CEICI provides researchers with bibliographic resources on the Camino Inglés, press publications, brochures, a computer, a printer, internet access and a freely usable photo database.

There is an information point for the Camino Inglés in Sigüeiro’s municipal swimming pool. Pilgrims can obtain information about local services there.

The Oroso railway stop is located near Sigüeiro. On the AP-9, Sigüeiro has entrances and exits towards A Coruña and Santiago. The N-550 crosses the municipality of Oroso from north to south.

Traditions and Events

The Festa da Troita has been held in Sigüeiro since 1996 and celebrates the local tradition of trout fishing. The Festa da Troita includes a free trout tasting. The festival is also associated with a fishing competition held on the second Sunday in May.
