As Xarfas Lagoon is enclosed by the sea; its boundary is formed by the dunes of Area Maior Beach. Area Maior is a white sandy beach at the foot of Monte Louro. Monte Louro has two peaks and reaches a height of 241 metres. Monte e Lagoa de Louro is designated as a Geological Site of National Interest.
Thus, lagoon, dunes, sandy beach and mountain form a closely interconnected landscape along this stretch of coast. The name Monte e Lagoa de Louro refers to the geologically designated connection between the mountain and lagoon, while Area Maior denotes the beach at the foot of the mountain. The two peaks and the height of 241 metres are part of the description of Monte Louro and complement the information about the lagoon and beach.
Nature
The Costa de Louro Route is suitable for observing different types of dunes, the adaptations of dune flora and the inhabitants of the rocky shore. The Costa de Louro Route is also connected to an area within the Natura 2000 network. This area is designated as a Site of Community Importance.
The route therefore connects several clearly named natural areas: the dunes with their different forms, the flora adapted to them, and the rocky shore with its inhabitants. The designation as an area within the Natura 2000 network and as a Site of Community Importance additionally describes the designated protection and area status, without establishing any further characteristics of the place.
Routes
The Monte Louro Route is intended to explore the cultural heritage associated with the area, as well as its geological and ecological aspects. Nature observation along the Costa de Louro Route focuses on dune types, dune flora and the rocky shore.
