Nature

Cabo Ortegal is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Special Protection Area for the natural values of the Costa Ártabra.

The Cabo Ortegal complex formed around 340 million years ago during the collision of the continents Laurentia and Gondwana.

At Cabo Ortegal, species such as storm petrels, yellow-billed shearwaters, European shags and northern gannets can be observed in the air and on the cliffs.

Up to 18 species of gull have been observed while birdwatching in Cariño; in winter, rare species such as the glaucous gull or the Iceland gull may be among them.

Hiking

The linear route from Miradoiro da Malveira to the viewpoints of Mirador de Vixía de Herbeira or Mirador da Miranda crosses the Serra da Capelada.

It is moderately difficult to challenging and takes about three hours one way.

A route from Miradoiro da Malveira passes the Limo viewpoint at an altitude of 380 metres and the Lodeiro viewpoint at 390 metres.

It offers views of the Ría de Cariño-Ortigueira.

The Cabo Ortegal hiking route is 4.54 kilometres long and has a low level of difficulty.

It is not a circular route and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

The Cariño–Figueiroa hike is a low-difficulty circular route around Monte Masanteo.

The round trip takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

The Cariño–Cabo Ortegal route can be extended by a further hour from the Miradoiro da Malveira viewpoint.

The circular route crosses Monte Faroleiro and the village of Vacariza and ends at the Punta Gabeira viewpoint.

The route to San Xiao do Trebo and onward to Cabo Ortegal is 4.5 kilometres long.

It is linear, has a medium level of difficulty and takes approximately one and a half hours one way.

Culture

The Cariño–San Xiao do Trebo–Cabo Ortegal route begins in front of Cariño Town Hall and ends at Cabo Ortegal.

The chapel of San Xiao do Trebo was built on an ancient Roman settlement.

A centuries-old tradition exists around San Xiao do Trebo and is celebrated on the last Saturday in January.

The Zona Vella de Cariño is catalogued as a unique ethnographic heritage ensemble.

Guided tours of the Fábrica de Conservas La Pureza are only possible by prior appointment, subject to availability and a minimum number of participants to be determined depending on the activity.
