Santa Comba: Nature, Hiking Trails and Religious Heritage

Nature and Water

Playa fluvial de Esmorode was developed into a public river park in 1994. It has picnic areas, fountains and barbecue facilities in the shade of the trees. Playa fluvial de Esmorode is also a fishing area that includes both the Río Xallas and its tributary, the Abuín.

Fervenza de Castriz is a natural waterfall approximately eight metres high on the Río Mira, a tributary of the Xallas. The area around Fervenza de Castriz has a recreational area with a picnic site, tables and barbecue facilities.

Trails and Landscape

A Xesteira is a 13-kilometre circular hiking trail in the area around the municipal capital of Santa Comba. The A Xesteira trail passes through a section surrounded by oak trees, with the Río Xallas flowing on the right-hand side.

The Fontes do Xallas – Fervenza de Castriz route is a linear hike connecting two particularly interesting points in terms of landscape and natural features in the northern, more mountainous part of the municipality of Santa Comba. La ruta del wolfram is a circular trail in the area around San Salvador, Monte Varilongo and the mine there.

Culture and History

The Ermita de San Bartolomé dates from the Late Middle Ages, more precisely from the 13th or 14th century. It was built on the remains of a castro or a similar settlement.

The Pazo de Santiso / Casa do Pozo houses the Museo Terra do Xallas, which collects various objects and works of art from the region. Santa Comba's religious heritage includes 17 parish churches, five chapels and four hermitages.

San Fiz de Freixeiro is described as the oldest religious building in the surrounding area and is dated to the 12th century. The Capela da Nosa Señora de Rubín, together with the holy spring of Rubín, forms an important sanctuary.

Mina de Varilongo was discovered in 1941 and was of crucial importance to the armaments industry of the National Socialists.

Traditions and Spirituality

The Fisterra-Muxía Way of Saint James runs for a short stretch of just under 800 metres through Santa Comba, specifically through the parish of San Martiño de Fontecada.

The fairs of Santa Comba take place on the town's two central avenues, known as Campo da feira. They are regularly held on the Saturday before the first Sunday of each month, as well as on the Monday after the second and third Sunday of each month.

On fair days, restaurants and other food establishments in Santa Comba traditionally serve tripe and/or octopus as tapas or daily specials.
