Discover Boiro: Castros, Coastal Paths and Waterfall

The Castros de Neixón are an archaeological site that was recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2011.

History and Archaeology

Situated on a small peninsula, the Castros de O Neixón consist of two settlements: Castro Pequeno dates from the 6th to the 4th century BC, while Castro Grande dates from the 4th century BC to the 3rd or 4th century AD.

The Castros de Neixón are among the first Galician archaeological sites to have been studied using methods that can be regarded as early approaches to archaeology as a scientific discipline.

At the entrance to the Neixón archaeological site is the Centro Arqueolóxico do Barbanza, which preserves finds from the archaeological excavations and is considered the first archaeological collection in Galicia with a local focus that is open to visitors.

The Centro Arqueolóxico do Barbanza has adaptations for people with visual impairments; the lower exhibition room is suitable for people with reduced mobility.

The Casota do Páramo is a Galician megalithic burial chamber and is recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest. A historical engraving on one of the chamber’s slabs depicts a monstrance or reliquary beside a chalice.

The Arca do Barbanza is located near the middle course of the Río Barbanza, is relatively well preserved and has a dolmen chamber made of enormous granite slabs, some of which weigh more than 7 tonnes.

The Romería de San Ramón de Bealo takes place every year on 31 August, has been celebrated for 260 years and holds the status of a Galician festival of tourist interest. Every year, dozens of women ask San Ramón for a child as part of a fertility ritual.

Routes and Viewpoints

The Boiro section of the A Orixe Pilgrims’ Way is 32 kilometres long and runs from the Estivada stream to the Ermita de Ponte Beluso in Bealo.

The Boiro Tourist Office stamps pilgrims’ credentials for A Orixe digitally or on paper.

A hiking route begins in the centre of Boiro at the Río Coroño in Brazos, passes through the mountains of the parishes up to the Serra do Barbanza and offers views of the Ría de Arousa and the Río Coroño estuary from Castelo de Vitres.

The Ruta das Mámoas is a natural passage route through the interior of the Serra with more than 30 burial mounds. It can be walked independently; guided walks are usually organized by the Centro Arqueolóxico do Barbanza.

The Paseo Fluvial do Río Breiro is an almost 1-kilometre-long footpath connecting Boiro town centre with the Paseo marítimo de Barraña.

The Paseo marítimo de Barraña has a cycle path, football and beach volleyball courts, a fitness park, a training area and space for running.

Coast and Maritime Culture

On the Ruta do mexillón, group excursions are organized from the ports of Escarabote and Cabo de Cruz, offering the chance to learn at close quarters about the cultivation and marketing of mussels.

The Ruta do mexillón travels by boat between the mussel rafts to near the island of Rua.

It explains mussel farming from the gathering of seed to the finished product and includes a wine tasting.

The ethnographic maritime exhibition “Mar de Boiro” covers the gathering of mussels and other shellfish, coastal fishing, as well as mussels, and displays traditional fishing equipment.

Nature

The Cascada de Cadarnoxo is considered one of Galicia’s largest waterfalls and has a vertical drop of 30 metres.

After about 500 metres, signs lead to Cadarnoxo Waterfall; it is almost accessible by car, after which only a few metres have to be covered on foot.

A Casa das Camelias is a botanical garden with a wide variety of plants from around the world, a camellia maze, a pond, a mill and a hórreo.

The Mirador de Coto de A Filloa offers views of the Ría de Arousa.
