Culture
Mallas is home to the Capela da Purísima Concepción, a rectangular chapel with a single nave. Its main façade is simple and crowned by a bell gable. One bell forms part of this façade structure. The clear form of the building, the single nave and the bell gable together shape the building's exterior and interior layout.
Another chapel bears the name Inmaculada Concepción. It is also located in Mallas and dates from the 18th century. Thus, in addition to the Capela da Purísima Concepción, a second named religious building in the village has been documented, with its chronological classification explicitly referring to this century.
Casa das Peritas is located in Mallas on the Costa da Morte in Galicia. The gallery is dedicated to contemporary art. It combines exhibitions with site-specific projects and an international outlook. Its programme therefore includes both presented art and projects that relate to a specific place. The international outlook complements this combination of exhibition activity and site-specific work.
The mills along the course of the river are also among the defining features. Their arrangement serves to make optimal use of the water. The mills are currently abandoned. Their present-day description thus combines their location by the water with their former intended use and the current condition of the facilities.
Architecture and Art
The Capela da Purísima Concepción features restrained architectural design. The rectangular floor plan and the single nave determine the spatial form, while the simple main façade has no elaborate ornamentation. The bell gable rises above it; the bell located there forms a single, clearly identified element of the façade structure.
The Inmaculada Concepción complements the chapel with its dating to the 18th century. Casa das Peritas, by contrast, represents a different temporal reference: contemporary art, exhibitions, site-specific projects and an international outlook are at the centre of the gallery. Thus, Mallas contains both named chapels with specific architectural features and an exhibition venue whose work is focused on contemporary art and different project contexts.
Landscape
Playa de Langosteira beach is located in the vicinity of Mallas.
The O caduiro do Ézaro waterfall (río Xallas) is located in the vicinity of Mallas.
Cabo da Nave, a cape, is also located nearby.
The island of Lobeira Grande is also part of the surrounding area. It lies near Mallas and adds an island to the landscape references. The named destinations therefore range from a beach to a waterfall, a cape and an island, while the mills are directly connected with the village landscape along the course of the river.
