Hiking and Trails

In Ares, Camiños de Ares comprises several hiking trails that lead from the town centre to the parishes of the municipality. The hiking trails are signposted, and virtual tracks are also available for them. The trails thus provide access to various parts of the municipality, while the names of the individual routes refer to their respective destinations. Castro de Sta. Mariña, Punta Coitelada and Punta Segaño therefore each represent a separate route within the trail network.

Route 1: Castro de Sta. Mariña runs along the coast, passing coves, islets, cliffs and coastal forests. Route 2: Punta Coitelada leads to Punta Coitelada, a natural viewpoint. Along this route, Chanteiro Beach and the Ermida da Mercé are among the highlighted cultural monuments. Route 3: Punta Segaño runs through Cervás to Montefaro, where it leads to the Mosteiro de Santa Catalina and the remains of former military facilities.

Culture

The Mosteiro de Santa Catalina de Montefaro was founded at the end of the 14th century and features an artistic style between Romanesque and Gothic. The best-preserved cloister of the Mosteiro is located behind the church and was designed in the Renaissance style. Thus, both the medieval foundation and a cloister built at a later date are central features of the same site.

Ares has five small Castro remains. Together, they reflect the pre-Romanesque archaeological character of the various parishes. The Batería de Sudova is a military fortification from the early 20th century and also a viewpoint over the Ría de Ferrol. Ares Indiano is a celebration held in Ares. It addresses the legacy of Galician emigration and its traces in the history of Ares.

Water

Praia de Ares stretches for 1.3 kilometres along the town's seafront promenade. The water at Praia de Ares is calm, and the beach is suitable for sailing. The combination of seafront promenade, beach and calm water directly characterises this area beside the town.

Nature

A Xunqueira is a centrally located riverside walking route. The trail is suitable for photography and birdwatching.

Mirador da Bailadora offers panoramic views over the Ría de Ferrol. Mugardos is in the foreground. In the background are the Ciudad Departamental, the military arsenal and the shipyards of Fene. The view therefore extends across the ria from Mugardos to the named facilities and shipyards in the background.

Cuisine

The municipal market of Ares is located in the town centre and promotes local and regional products. Ares' culinary offering focuses on seafood and fish. These include “ameixas á mariñeira”, “polbo á feira”, cockles and fish dishes such as “xibia guisada”. The dishes mentioned retain their Galician names and reflect the regional character of the cuisine.
