Cuíña: Church, Tidal Mill and Beaches

Cuíña in Ortigueira combines its own parish church with a remarkable tidal mill and several named destinations in the nearby and wider surrounding area. The Church of Santiago de Cuíña is the parish church of Cuíña in Ortigueira. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The church is thus named as a building of the Parish of Santiago de Cuíña; its Latin-cross floor plan remains the specific architectural feature.

Culture and History

The local history also includes the Escolar de Santiago de Cuiña. The school building dates from 1923 and is one of a total of eight schools in Ortigueira funded by the local emigrant community. Thus, both the parish church and the school in Cuíña represent different periods of local history: the church is the parish church of Cuíña in Ortigueira, while the Escolar is associated with funding by the emigrant community.

The Tidal Mill on the Ría

At the eastern end of the Ría de Ortigueira, the Muíño de Marea de Pol is located in a small bay. The Río Maior flows into this bay. The mill is situated between the parishes of Santiago de Cuíña and San Xulián de Senra. The Muíño de Marea de Pol is the last tidal mill built in Galicia.

Construction work on the mill was sponsored between 1905 and 1910 by an emigrant who had returned from Cuba.
