Padrón: Literature, River Landscape and Pilgrimage Tradition

Rosalía de Castro spent the last years of her life in the Casa da Matanza in Padrón and died there in 1885.

Culture and History

The Casa da Matanza was restored in 1971 and converted into a Casa-Museo in 1972.

The Fundación Camilo José Cela in Iria Flavia is housed in 18th-century buildings that were built as residences for canons.

Its halls display hundreds of book titles, awards and prizes, including the 1989 Nobel Prize, the 1995 Cervantes Prize and the 1987 Prince of Asturias Award.

The Fundación preserves the writer's entire body of work, his manuscripts, private collections and documents relating to his life.

The Jardín Botánico–Artístico de Padrón was declared an asset of cultural interest, Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), in 1946.

The Jardín Botánico–Artístico de Padrón covers around 1 hectare and preserves approximately 300 species.

El Pedrón is a Roman altar that Jacobean tradition associates with the boat that brought the mortal remains of the Apostle James from Palestine to Galicia.

El Pedrón can be viewed beneath the high altar of the Iglesia de Santiago in Padrón.

The chapel of O Santiaguiño do Monte is currently open only during the novena and the Santiaguiño do Monte pilgrimage festival on 25 July.

Trails and River Landscape

The “Camilo José Cela en Padrón nº1” Literary Route is a 790-metre circular walk through the parish of Iria Flavia.

The “Camilo José Cela en Padrón nº2” Literary Route is a moderately difficult, 4-kilometre route through these places and other notable sites in neighbouring Padrón.

The Ruta del Pimiento de Herbón is a circular hiking route.

Along the course of the Ulla River through Padrón, there are up to 14 pesqueiras for lamprey fishing, also known as canles, between Herbón and Carcacía-Lapido.

The pesqueiras del río Ulla are traditional stone structures that were used for the artisanal fishing of river lampreys.

A religious community settled in the Convento de San Antonio de Herbón in 1396; it remained there for more than six centuries and continues to do so today.

Food and Market

The Xornadas Gastronómicas da lamprea offer traditional and modern menus featuring Lamprea do Ulla at participating establishments in Padrón.

The Xornadas Gastronómicas da lamprea may include culinary workshops, competitions, talks, routes and guided tours.

The Mercado Dominical offers, among other things, seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheese, cured meats and liqueurs.

The Mercado Dominical takes place every Sunday and attracts thousands of visitors of all ages, including guests from other autonomous communities.

Pilgrimage Tradition

Since 2010, the municipality of Padrón has awarded the “Pedronía” diploma in connection with the Camiño da Pedronía.
