Nature
Boqueixón is home to Pico Sacro, a quartz formation created by tectonic movements and of exceptional geological significance. Its distinctive pyramid shape makes it an unmistakable landscape feature. From the summit, you can see across large parts of central Galicia, particularly the Ulla Valley. The legends and stories surrounding Pico Sacro are reflected in tangible cultural heritage such as the Ermida de Santo Estevo and the caves of Burato dos Mouros.
Fervenza de Donas is a two-tiered waterfall on the Río Pontillón, a tributary of the Ulla, with a drop of about 10 metres. Fervenza de Codeso descends in two cascades over a height difference of about 20 metres. At Fervenza de Vigo ou de Rubio on the Río Zaramo, a tributary of the Ulla, the height difference is approximately 8 metres; the waterfall is located in the parish of Vigo.
Routes and visiting
Pico Sacro can be reached by private car or bus as far as the Capela de San Sebastián, located close to the summit; the final section must be covered on foot. Fervenza do Muíño da Serra ou do Pereiro is not easy to find because of the lack of signposting. The access route leads to a tunnel under the railway tracks, where you park before continuing the descent to the river on foot.
Access to Fervenza de Donas is signposted and considered easy, making it suitable for visits with children. Access to Fervenza de Vigo ou de Rubio is also signposted. Fervenza de Codeso can be reached by descending to the river and following its course to the waterfall.
Illas de Gres is a recreational area in Ledesma and lies along the Camino de Invierno and Vía de la Plata pilgrimage routes. Pena do Corvo is also associated with the Camino de Invierno and Vía de la Plata pilgrimage routes.
Culture and architecture
The Capela de San Sebastián do Pico Sacro preserves an 11th-century granite altar in the presbytery, as well as Romanesque columns in the main altar area. The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María de Lestedo was built in the 20th century as a church with a Latin-cross floor plan and preserves a cross from the first third of the 18th century by Domingo González.
The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa Eulalia de Codeso has a nave with a Latin-cross floor plan. Its two-storey bell gable has two bells, a triangular finial within an arched frame and lateral pinnacles. The same church houses a processional cross from the first third of the 17th century, commissioned by the Provisor Juan de Herrera from Domingo González, a silversmith from Santiago.
The Cruceiro de Rubial is a granite stone cross on a truncated-pyramid-shaped stepped structure with a round base. The Pazo de Quián was once the residence of the Campuzano family. It still contains a rustic stone cruceiro with an octagonal platform, base, cross and floral finials, as well as a building with a crenellated tower and an attached chapel.
At the Pazo de Quián, the Pura Raza Cabalo Galego centre offers free guided tours from Monday to Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., subject to prior registration by telephone or in writing.
Festivals and traditions
The traditional Entroido of the Ulla is shaped by the Xenerais do Ulla in Sergude and Lestedo. The festival includes Xenerais e Correos, mounted processions, as well as the Atranques and their calls. The traditional Entroido of the Ulla has been declared an asset of cultural interest as intangible cultural heritage.
The Festa das Carrozas do San Cidre has a history spanning half a century. Its floats are handcrafted from recycled materials and agricultural materials; the gastronomy associated with these activities is a central element of the celebration. The Festa das Carrozas do San Cidre has been recognised as a Festa de Interese Turístico de Galicia.
