Santiso: Cultural Heritage, Natural Areas and Routes by the Reservoir

Nature

The Serra do Careón Río Furelos Special Area of Conservation and Natura 2000 site are located in Santiso and are considered an area of great geological interest and exceptional botanical importance.

In Barazón Grande stands the Barazón Grande hórreo, built in 1793 and the oldest hórreo in Santiso for which records are available.

Other destinations: Padrón, O Pindo, Manón, Oroso, Santaia, O Sisto, O Coto and Cesuras.

Culture

The Igrexa Parroquial de San Pedro de Belmil has a rectangular floor plan and a façade with recognisable Baroque elements. Its high altar retable contains Neoclassical elements.

The Pazo de Vilar de Ferreiros is surrounded by a wall with a Baroque portal; a small chapel stands beside it.

The Igrexa de San Estebo de Pezobrés is Romanesque and dates from the 12th to the 13th century. The Pazo da Pena is considered an example of traditional Galician architecture in Santiso.

The Cruceiro de Visantoña has an elaborately crafted platform and a base decorated with traditional symbols. The Visantoña music band has operated continuously since its founding in August 1887.

Routes

The PR-G 125 Sendeiro de Visantoña is a circular route that begins at the Centro Social de Visantoña in the parish of Santiso and is suitable for walking, cycling or horse riding.

The circular route passes the Muíños do Tajo mill complex and runs alongside the remains of the megalithic tombs of O Ribeiro.

In the parish of Beigondo, there is an easy circular route of approximately 7 kilometres that follows the Portodemouros Reservoir for most of its length. Another easy circular route begins and ends at Campo da Igrexa in San Román.

A 70-kilometre circular tour through the municipality of Santiso partly follows the PR-G 226 Roteiro da Beseña and PR-G 125 Sendeiro de Visantoña routes.

Activities by the Water

A ferry has connected Santiso with Vila de Cruces since 1977, carrying passengers and cars continuously and free of charge across the reservoir.

The municipality of Santiso has created a three-hour driving route focused on cultural heritage that can be reached by visitors by car.

Around the Portodemouros Reservoir, active tourism providers offer, among other activities, canoeing and windsurfing courses.

Annual Calendar

The Festa do Rio takes place at the Area Recreativa da Cornella recreational area at the end of August. The Ruta Cabalar do Pantano de Visantoña is an event held every year in April.
