Manón – Nature, Coast and Historic Places

Manón. Estaca de Bares is the northernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. It lies along several migration routes for marine and terrestrial species from the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Arctic.

Culture and History

At Porto de Bares, the Dique Fenicio is unique in Galicia. In A Vila de Bares, the Igrexa Vella is considered an archaeological site. It is associated with the former medieval parish church of Bares and an associated necropolis.

Thus, Porto de Bares and A Vila de Bares represent two different historical connections to the local area: the Dique Fenicio belongs to the harbour area, while the Igrexa Vella is associated with the former ecclesiastical building and the necropolis. Each of these two places preserves its own connection to the history of Bares.

Nature and Coast

Playa de Esteiro lies within the Estaca de Bares Special Area of Conservation, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network. In the municipality of Mañón, Playa de Esteiro is an approximately one-kilometre-long sandy beach next to the mouth of the Esteiro River. The protected section at the mouth of the Esteiro at Playa de Esteiro has calmer waters and a recreational area with a picnic site.

At Esteiro Beach, the coastal landscape combines the sandy beach with the river mouth and the protected section. To reach Porto de Bares, take the AC-862 road to the Ría de O Barqueiro and then continue on the AC-100. The coastal highlights therefore include both a beach at the Esteiro estuary and the harbour area of Porto de Bares.

Trails and Recreation

At the Muiños da Furada recreational area, it is possible to fish for brown trout and sea trout; the area lies along a section of the fishing grounds on the Sor River. The Muiños da Furada recreational area can be reached via a suspension bridge.

The PR-G 212 Ruta Ponte do Porto - Ponte Ulló runs from A Ponte do Porto to Ponte Ulló; both endpoints are located in the municipality of Mañón. The PR-G 204 Ruta Ribeira do Bispo - Miradoiro de Augas Caídas follows the Sor River through a lush Atlantic riverside forest.

Fervenza de Augas Caídas can be reached on foot from the end of the road, via stairs leading to the foot of the waterfall. The trails described therefore pass through different types of landscape: the PR-G 204 follows the lush riverside forest along the Sor, while access to Fervenza de Augas Caídas begins at the end of the road and continues via stairs.

Between the river and the coast, Manón also offers various forms of recreation: the fishing grounds on the Sor belong to the Muiños da Furada area, the routes run along the river and riverside forest, and Fervenza de Augas Caídas is another destination with its own access route. These place names identify the municipality’s different settings without combining them into a single circular route.
