Nature and Coast

A Frouxeira Beach is approximately 3 km long. It borders a lagoon on one side and cliffs on the other. The ensemble comprising Valdoviño’s lagoon and beach is protected as an “Espacio Natural en Régimen de Protección General”.

An unpaved path runs along the eastern shore of the da Frouxeira Lagoon. This path includes a birdwatching station and information panels. The Senda da Lagoa da Frouxeira is a flat, linear path. It is approximately 2.4 km long. It runs between the small beach of A Frouxeira and the area around the AC-116.

The description of the shore thus connects several clearly named landscape features: the lagoon, beach and cliffs are directly related in terms of content, while the path along the eastern shore is additionally associated with nature observation and information through the station and panels.

Water and Events

Pantín - O Rodo is considered one of Galicia’s outstanding surfing destinations. The Pantín Classic has been held on this beach in Valdoviño since 1988. It takes place between the end of August and the first week of September.

The Baixada das Carrilanas de San Mamede takes place in August. It has been held more than twenty times.

The “As Forcadas” Nautical Club has facilities for storing boats. There is also a jetty that provides access to the reservoir from the parish of Vilaboa. Introductory courses are held every summer on the calm waters of the As Forcadas reservoir. The course content includes dinghy sailing and canoeing.

The time frames therefore range from August, when the Carrilanas takes place, to the period from the end of August into the first week of September for the Pantín Classic. For the reservoir, summer is given as the period when the annual introductory courses take place.

Culture

The Océano Surf Museo opened in December 2017. It is Spain’s first museum dedicated to surfing.

The museum presents the history of surfing in Galicia. The presentation spans the period from its beginnings to the present day. Texts, plans and illustrations are among the materials used. Original pieces, photographs and audiovisual media complement the presentation.

The exhibition thus combines a time span from the beginnings to the present day with different forms of presentation. In addition to texts, plans and illustrations, original pieces, photographs and audiovisual media also form part of its presentation.

History and Views

Castro de A Frouxeira is an ancient settlement site. It dates from the Iron Age and is located on a strategic headland. The site offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coast.

The Igrexa de Santa Eulalia de Valdoviño is a church. Its style is eclectic. It stands on a hill offering a coastal panorama overlooking A Frouxeira Beach and Lagoon.

From the Faro de Punta Frouxeira, Praia and A Frouxeira Lagoon can be seen to the northeast. To the southwest, the cliffs and the Ermita do Porto are visible.

The historical and scenic sites thus present different spatial points of reference side by side: the headland of the Iron Age settlement site, the hill of the church, and the directions named from the lighthouse, each with their visible coastal features.
