O Sisto: Portuguese Way and stone-built historic centre
The original centre of O Sisto is known for its numerous restored stone-built houses. A one-kilometre branch of the Portuguese Way, signposted with stone markers, runs between O Sisto and Angueira de Castro.
Things to do
A variant of the Portuguese Way runs through a pine forest between Sisto and the village of Angueira de Castro. The branch between O Sisto and Angueira de Castro passes through pine and oak woodland; at the end, there are a few eucalyptus trees. At Angueira de Castro, the Portuguese Way runs at the foot of Castro Lupario. After the section between Sisto and Angueira de Castro, the Portuguese Way continues to Pazo do Faramello. The section of the Portuguese Way through Rois was changed in 2019 to improve pilgrims’ safety and prevent them from having to cross the N-550.
In the surrounding area, Pazo Faramello is connected to the Portuguese Way, the Portuguese Coastal Way and the Ruta del Mar de Arousa y Ulla.
The municipality of Rois has developed and signposted hiking trails. In the surrounding area, the Ruta do Castro Lupario is an easy circular route; its variants are 3.8 to 4.5 kilometres long. In the surrounding area, the Ruta do Castro Lupario can be started at the picnic area in Angueira de Castro, at the bridge in Paradela or at any point along the route. In the surrounding area, the Ruta do Castro Lupario follows the Río Tinto upstream towards Pazo do Faramello.
In the surrounding area, Castro Lupario lies on the border between Rois and Brión; from its elevation of 110 metres above sea level, it offers panoramic views, and its grounds can be explored on foot.
The circular route “O Sisto (O Xardín dos Recordos)” starts and ends in the village of Sisto in Rois. It follows the Río Tinto and passes by the Xardín dos Recordos. In the surrounding area is the Xardín do Recordo, a memorial site for the victims of the Alvia train accident in 2013.
