Culture and History

The Torreón de Andrade is the last surviving part of the Andrade Palace. This palace closed off the western side of the walled town of Pontedeume.

The Andrade Interpretation Centre is located in the Torreón de Andrade. The centre is dedicated to the noble Andrade family and Pontedeume in the Middle Ages.

Castillo de Andrade was built in the 14th century. It stands in the parish of Nogueirosa. Its location is at an altitude of more than 300 metres. The keep overlooks the Ría de Ares and the town of Pontedeume.

Today’s Ponte do Eume has 15 arches. It preserves remains of the engineering works. These works were carried out between 1380 and 1386.

Paths and Coast

The Camino Inglés passes through the cobbled streets of Pontedeume. It also passes through the medieval historic quarter.

Pontedeume’s Paseo Marítimo runs from the stone bridge structure almost to the motorway bridge. Later sections follow the Covés River. These later sections run parallel to the motorway.

The municipality of Pontedeume has five beaches. The municipality also includes other small, accessible coves.

The waterside path and the beaches thus represent different coastal settings: the Paseo Marítimo initially follows the bridge structure and later the Covés River, while the municipality includes smaller coves in addition to five beaches.

Nature and Tides

Shellfish have traditionally been gathered in the Pontedeume estuary. Hand tools are used for this work. These include hoes and rakes. The gathering is carried out mainly at low tide.

The Fragas del Eume Nature Park covers 9,125 hectares. Its area includes slopes and mountains. These lie along the Eume River.

The estuary therefore brings together the influence of the tides and traditional manual work with hoes and rakes. By contrast, the slopes and mountains of the Fragas del Eume Nature Park follow the course of the Eume River across an area of 9,125 hectares.

Gastronomy

Pontedeume’s long gastronomic tradition is known for seafood. It is also known for fish. It is likewise known for produce from the garden.

Costrada is one of Pontedeume’s typical products. Melindres are also one of Pontedeume’s typical products. These products also include Almendrados, Proia and Torta de Pontedeume.

The regional cuisine thus combines seafood and fish with produce from the garden. Costrada, Melindres, Almendrados, Proia and Torta de Pontedeume complement this culinary tradition with typical local products.

Festivals

The Fiestas de las Peras take place from 7 to 11 September in honour of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino and the Virgin of Virtues.

The Feirón Medieval de los Andrade takes place on the first weekend of July.
