Mugardos: English Way, Coast and Historical Heritage

Mugardos lies on the so-called English Way to Santiago de Compostela. Along the AC-130, a walking and cycling path runs through the municipality of Mugardos between Ares and Mugardos.

Culture and History

Castillo de la Palma is a defensive structure with a history spanning more than 400 years. In the O Seixo area of the municipality of Mugardos lies the Roman villa of Noville, which was excavated in the late 1980s.

The Church of San Vicente de Mehá was built in the 19th century on the remains of a 16th-century chapel. In Franza, the present-day Chapel of San Vitorio replaced an older chapel that stood above the Castro de San Victorio.

The historical heritage thus ranges from a Roman villa and an older chapel and its successor buildings to a defensive structure with more than four centuries of history. Each of these examples is associated with its own location within the municipality: O Seixo, Mehá, Franza and Castillo de la Palma.

The Voto de Chanteiro is a tradition deeply rooted in Mugardos and forms part of the municipality’s cultural and popular heritage.

Coast and Water

Bestarruza Beach is accessible via the seafront promenade and via steps from Parque del Campo de la Catedral. On 15 June, the municipality put a lifeguard service into operation there at the start of the summer season.

The landing stage for the Mugardos–Ferrol boat service is one of the town’s main visitor attractions.

Along the coast, the beach, the seafront promenade, Parque del Campo de la Catedral and the connection to Ferrol via the aforementioned boat landing stage are therefore located alongside one another.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Festa do Polbo is a gastronomic celebration on the seafront promenade of Mugardos and takes place as part of the Festas do Carme. At the Festa do Polbo, octopus is prepared in the Mugardos style.

The sauce contains onions, green peppers and red peppers.
