Teo: Petroglyphs, the Ulla riverbanks and historic routes

The Outeiro do Corno petroglyph site is signposted and forms part of Route PR-G 238, the Teo petroglyph route. The route leads to the petroglyphs of Río Angueira and Monte Piquiño through an area of granite hills and numerous archaeological remains.

Culture

The Monte Piquiño archaeological site is a necropolis consisting of 33 megalithic burial mounds in Loureiro, in the parish of Luou. Near the village of Loureiro, nine petroglyph sites are located in the immediate surroundings of this megalithic necropolis.

The medieval Pontevea Bridge is a stone footbridge over the Ulla. In February 2017, the bridge was recognised as a BIC, a Site of Cultural Interest.

The Gothic wayside cross of Francos is considered one of the oldest in Galicia and dates from the 15th century. Rudimentary figures accompany the wayside cross; they may represent two pilgrims, reinforcing its connection with the Portuguese Way.

Nature

The Burga de Xermeade is a sulphur spring with a semicircular stone structure. Water emerges from an outlet of the spring.

The Burga de Xermeade has a 13.90 m paved recreation area. Seven stone benches stand around old oak trees.

The Xirimbao recreation area provides access to several hiking trails on the banks of the Ulla. The area includes car parks, picnic tables and public toilets.

The banks of the Ulla in Teo are protected under European environmental legislation as part of Natura 2000. On the banks of the Ulla, in the Ulla-Deza river system running through the parishes of Teo and Reis, hiking trails follow the river.

The Devesa de Agromaior oak forest lies along the hiking route connecting Teo with the Burga de Xermeade, in a riverside area of the Ulla protected by Natura 2000. Some of its trees are very long-lived. The forest forms a notable area of vegetation that helps mitigate pressures on the riverbanks and provides shelter for animal species.

The protected riverside area of the Ulla and the Devesa de Agromaior oak forest are therefore among the natural sections along the route connecting Teo and the Burga de Xermeade. Several hiking trails in the Xirimbao recreation area run along the riverbanks through the Ulla area.

Hiking trails

The section of the Portuguese Way through Teo is just under 8 km long. It is signposted and equipped with information panels.

The Camiño da Geira dos arrieiros runs for 14 km through Teo, from Pontevea towards Montouto. Traditionally, this route was also used by carters to transport wine from Ribeiro to Compostela.

The two routes specify different distances: the section of the Portuguese Way through Teo is just under 8 km long, while the Camiño da Geira dos arrieiros is 14 km long. In the case of the second route, not only its course but also its traditional use by carters to transport wine from Ribeiro to Compostela has been preserved.
