Discover Trazo: Culture, Nature and Festivities

The Ruta de Trazo is a free, easy route with an approximate duration of five hours. Registration confirmation is required to participate.

Culture and History

The Pazo de Vilacoba features a long balcony with a stone balustrade and a family coat of arms. The Cova dos Mouros has a narrow entrance and a quadrangular engraving with a hole in the centre.

A cultural heritage complex is located on the Chonia River. Along the river, it includes grain mills, mills and former local power stations. The riverbanks can be explored on foot, revealing traditional architecture along the river as well.

A Ponte Albar is a stone bridge with five arches and is listed in the catalogue of Galicia’s historic viaducts. A road crosses the Tambre via A Ponte Albar and thereby leads into the municipality of Trazo. The bridge thus combines its historical classification with a specific geographical connection to the river and the municipality.

The Church of San Xoán de Campo features Romanesque characteristics. The Church of San Pedro de Benza dates from the 12th century. Pilgrimage festivals are held twice a year at the Ermita de Santa Eufemia y San Mateo: on 16 September for Santa Eufemia and on 21 September for San Mateo. The two dates therefore fall in the same month but are dedicated to different saints. Together, these sites represent different chronological and stylistic layers of local history.

Landscape and Riverbanks

The Monte do Pedroso area in Monzo features distinctive granite formations and is suitable for a day trip. Pedra Faladora is a large, striking rock shaped like a human face. In addition to the granite formations and the distinctive rock shape, the riverbanks form another part of the landscape. Thus, geological formations and water-side areas come together in the landscape.

In the vicinity of A Ponte Albar, anglers and day-trippers come to the banks of the Tambre. The Tambre River and its tributaries have been included in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) because of their tree-covered riparian forests. This protection status covers the Tambre, its tributaries and the wooded riverbanks. The classification therefore applies not only to the main river but also to its tributaries and the wooded banks.

Festivals and Regional Dates

The Festa do Chourizo (Chorizo Festival) takes place on Sunday during the carnival celebrations. The Festa do Grelo (Turnip Greens Festival) takes place in March. The two festivals are therefore tied to different periods: one belongs to the calendar of the carnival celebrations, while the other takes place in March.
