Oleiros: Dexo-Serantes Coast
The Dexo-Serantes Coast is an 11-kilometre-long stretch of coastline extending from the Mera Lighthouse to the port of Lorbé. In 2000, it was declared a natural monument and included in the Galician Network of Protected Natural Areas. As a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), the Dexo-Serantes Coast is also part of the Natura 2000 network. The natural monument offers hiking opportunities, and visitors can observe native birds and plants along its coast.
Nature
The Aula do Mar information centre is a reception point for all visitors to the Dexo-Serantes Coast natural monument. It has a permanent interpretive exhibition about the Dexo-Serantes Coast. It provides information about appropriate behaviour around the natural monument and the hiking trails that run through the area. The former lighthouse keeper’s house on the Costa de Dexo was converted into the Aula do Mar, where visitors can learn about ecosystems and plan routes.
Trails
The Seixo Branco-Furnas route is 3.6 kilometres long, takes 90 minutes and has a moderate difficulty level. It begins and ends in Canabal. The Porto de Dexo route begins and ends at the Church of Santa María de Dexo. The Faros de Mera route begins and ends at the Aula do Mar information centre. The Senda Litoral Mera coastal path runs along the seafront of Mera; interpretive panels explain the biological, geographical and ethnographic significance of the area. Kayaking excursions are available along Mera Beach. The Sendero Costa Libre trail covers the stretch of coast from Santa Cristina to Santa Cruz.
Culture and History
The construction of Santa Cruz Castle was commissioned in the 16th century to strengthen the city’s defensive system following the attack on the port of A Coruña by the English Armada led by Sir Francis Drake. Santa Cruz Castle currently houses two municipal exhibition halls on the ground floor. It is located on a small island connected to the port of Santa Cruz by a footbridge.
The Os Oleiros Museum has a collection from more than 150 different pottery workshops. The museum is located in As Torres de Santa Cruz, also known as Pazo do Coruxo. Pazo do Coruxo is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest; its origins date back to the 17th century. The Church of Santa María de Dexo has origins dating back to 1108. Pazo de Xaz has a French-style garden with geometric patterns made from myrtle and a stone sundial. The garden of A Capela is ideal for walks through lush vegetation and beneath the ruins of the old Pazo de A Capela.
Local Tradition
The Lorbé gastronomic mussel festival takes place in early August during the Festivities of Carmen and attracts hundreds of visitors every year.
Geographical Setting
The Costa de Dexo area can be reached from A Coruña via A Ponte Pasaxe towards Santa Cruz and the beaches; in Mera, you can turn off towards the lighthouse or continue to the port of Lorbé.
