Culture and History

Santa Cruz Castle is one of the landmarks of the municipality of Oleiros because of its exceptional natural and scenic beauty, as well as its significant historical interest.

The construction of Santa Cruz Castle was commissioned in the 16th century. It was intended to strengthen the defensive system of the city of A Coruña. The reason was the attack on the port of A Coruña by the English Armada led by Sir Francis Drake.

The castle is located on a small island. A footbridge connects the island with the port of Santa Cruz.

Guided tours present the castle’s 400-year history. The programme is offered throughout the year. It is intended for educational institutions, social or non-profit organisations, as well as companies or organised groups. Tours must be arranged in advance.

The Os Oleiros Museum is a museum of traditional pottery. It contains an extensive collection from more than 150 pottery workshops, many of which no longer exist.

The museum is located in As Torres de Santa Cruz, also known as the Pazo do Coruxo manor house. The Pazo do Coruxo manor house is an iconic building. It is designated as a property of special cultural interest. Its origins date back to the 17th century.

The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz church was built by Miguel Fisac. Construction took place between 1966 and 1971 in the port of Santa Cruz de Oleiros (A Coruña, Spain).

At the beginning of August, an exhibition of traditional pottery takes place in Luís-Seoane Park in Santa Cruz.

The townscape therefore brings together named buildings and collections from different periods, from the commission in the 16th century to the church built between 1966 and 1971. The August event also ties in with the pottery represented in the museum and identifies Luís-Seoane Park as a specific venue.
