Pilgrimage Routes

The Portuguese Way establishes several connections with Cruces and the Santuario da Escravitude. A Escravitude–Milladoiro forms a stage of the Portuguese Way. In addition, the Portuguese Way leads from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela and on to A Escravitude.

The Santuario da Escravitude lies on the Portuguese Way along the coast and also on the Ruta del Mar de Arousa y Ulla. The two route names are therefore each directly associated with the sanctuary, while the aforementioned A Escravitude–Milladoiro stage denotes a separate section of the Portuguese Way.

Culture and Historic Buildings

The Santuario da Escravitude in Santa María de Cruces is attributed to José San Martín. Its origins date back to the 16th century. The Pazo da Peregrina is located in the vicinity of Cruces and is a palace. The Pazo de Maindo and the Palacio de Fonseca are also located nearby and likewise belong to the building type of palaces.

The Sede Afundación Santiago de Compostela, a museum, is also located in the vicinity of Cruces. The Pazo da Inquisición is privately owned and not open to visitors. The building is also known as Pazo de Montiño. On its portal, the upper section bears a coat of arms topped by a crown and a cross.

Thus, in addition to the museum, the surrounding area contains several palaces, while the Pazo da Inquisición is distinguished from the aforementioned buildings by its private status. Its alternative name, Pazo de Montiño, and the coat of arms on the portal are among the building's traditional features.

Nature

Monte Miranela, a mountain, is part of the immediate surroundings of Cruces. Monte del Pedregal and Monte Freiro are also located nearby and are likewise classified as mountains. Monte Gesteiras is also situated in the vicinity of Cruces and is considered a mountain.

The landscape names therefore refer to Monte Miranela in the immediate vicinity, as well as Monte del Pedregal, Monte Freiro, and Monte Gesteiras in the surroundings of Cruces. Each of these four names denotes a separate elevation.

Architecture

The Igrexa de Santa María de Cruces is a religious building made of granite masonry. Its floor plan is rectangular, and the building has a single nave. The main façade features a framed entrance portal with a broken straight pediment and a rectangular window. A single-nave bell tower stands on one side.

Cruceiro I forms part of the enclosing wall of the churchyard of the Igrexa de Santa María de Cruces. Cruceiro II is located in the churchyard of the same church. Its irregular base supports a square shaft with chamfered edges and a heavily eroded relief. Above this are a cubic capital and a simple cross with chamfered edges, which bears no representations.

The church therefore features a range of distinct architectural details: the granite masonry, the rectangular floor plan, the single nave, the elements of the main façade, and the side bell tower. Both cruceiros belong to the churchyard area, with the first incorporated into the enclosing wall and the second standing in the churchyard.
