Boimorto: Trails, Churches and Cultural Heritage

The Camino del Norte passes through Boimorto via the parishes of San Martiño de Andavao, San Miguel de Boimil, Santiago de Boimorto, San Pedro de Cardeiro, Santa María de Sendelle, San Pedro de Brates, San Xoán de Mercurín and Santa María dos Ánxeles.

Trails and landscape

The Ruta de Boimorto coincides with the Camino del Norte for part of its route. The recreational area in the parish of Os Ánxeles lies on the banks of the Río Batán along the Camino de Santiago and offers a place to rest and relax.

The Ruta de Dormeá passes through several natural viewpoints in the parish of Dormeá. The Ruta de Sendelle leads to the Pazo de Cuíntas. The Ruta de Os Ánxeles includes the church of Santa María dos Ánxeles as one of its religious monuments.

Culture and history

The Pazo de Vilanova is a pazo of civil cultural heritage in Dormeá and lies along the Camino del Norte. It is one of the largest and best-preserved pazos in Boimorto.

The church of Santa María de Sendelle was built in the 12th century and contains paintings from the 16th century depicting the Last Supper and the Last Judgment. The church of Santa María dos Ánxeles was built in the second half of the 12th century.

The Cruceiro de Andavao is an ethnographic heritage cross in A Arentía along the Camino del Norte. A Roman milestone discovered in 1981 indicates that a Roman road passed through Boimorto.

Chapels and architectural features

The Capela do Espíritu de San Brais is a rectangular chapel with a single nave and a bell gable with a single arch. The Capela do Carme has a rectangular floor plan, rendered stone walls and a gabled roof.

Its façade has a door and a window with a straight lintel, a rose window at the base and a round arch. The bell gable has an opening with a cross positioned above it.

The Capela Sagrado Corazón de Xesús is a simple chapel with a single nave and an area of approximately 10 m²; it houses a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Geographical location

Several provincial roads run through Boimorto, providing easy access to the provincial capital and Santiago de Compostela.

Events

The Mercado de la Luz brings together projects involving rural innovation, crafts, music, gastronomy and family activities as part of the Festival de la Luz in Boimorto.

The Festival de la Luz was held in the parish of Andabao through its eighth edition, which took place from 6 to 8 September 2019.

Magreco is a recurring fair in Boimorto for agricultural, industrial and gardening machinery. It offers a craft market and workshops on traditional crafts. Magreco also includes a livestock exhibition featuring specimens of the Rubia Gallega and Frisón breeds.

Other places include Seoane, Merelle, O Campo de Berdeogas, As Restrebas, Pardaces de Arriba, Cuíña, Ribeira and Ambroa.
