Estació de Xerta offers bicycle hire as well as shuttle and retrieval services along the Via Verda de la Val de Zafán–Terres de l’Ebre. Outside Estació de Xerta, there is a landscaped family recreation area with picnic tables and benches, a fountain, a children’s playground and parking spaces.

Culture and History

The route of Xerta’s manor houses leads to architectural remains, including the 16th-century chapel of Bishop Sentís. L’Assut de Xerta is a historic hydraulic structure on the Ebro that was completed at the beginning of the 15th century. The present-day Church of the Assumption of Mary and Sant Martí was expanded between 1580 and 1690.

Casa Ceremines is one of Xerta’s most distinguished manor houses. Its current appearance dates from a renovation in 1887, a few years after the house had been acquired by Ramon Martí i Tomàs.

Paths and Water

Xerta has hiking, excursion and mountain-biking routes along paths that cross the municipality and reach the foot of the Els Ports massif. The Ruta de la Barca passes through Xerta’s orchards below the town. The Trinxeres del Barranc dels Fornets are located next to the Via Verda de la Val de Zafán. Their development acknowledges the cultural heritage of the Spanish Civil War and contributes to historical remembrance.

Various water sports are practised on the Ebro near Xerta, including boating and sport fishing.

Festivals and Specialities

Sant Martí is Xerta’s main festival and is dedicated to the town’s patron saint; it takes place on 11 November. Traditional events include vaquillas in the streets, a communal dinner featuring beef stew and the Jota Xertolina dance.

Fogasseta is a traditional country dish from Xerta: a round loaf filled with an omelette made with artichoke, spring garlic and sausage. Torrons de Xerta are round sweets that have been made for centuries according to the same recipe, using hazelnuts, honey and sugar.
