Discover Gandesa: History, Wine and Holiday Apartments

In Gandesa, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was classified as a cultural asset of national interest in the category of historic monument.

Culture and History

Construction of the church began in the 12th century; the present building preserves its Romanesque apse and Romanesque portal. The Casa de la Vila Vella is also part of its history: the late-medieval 15th-century building in the civil Gothic style was partially incorporated into the extension of the Church of the Assumption.

The archaeological site of Coll del Moro is part of the historical trail and belongs to the Ruta de los Iberos. The origins of the Iberian settlement probably date back to the 6th to 5th centuries BC; it includes one of the few surviving necropolises of Iberian settlements in Catalonia.

Wine and Local Events

The Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa offers guided tours with wine tasting by prior reservation. The Festa del Vi, held on the first weekend of November, is a fixed date in the annual calendar.

At the Festa del Vi, wines from the Denominación de Origen Terra Alta are offered for tasting by various cooperatives and private wineries around the Cooperativa de Gandesa. The activity Al ritmo de la Garnacha Blanca includes a tasting of five wines made from the grape variety Garnacha Blanca, described as native to Terra Alta.

The same activity also includes a visit to almost one-hundred-year-old Garnacha Blanca vineyards, as well as an introduction to various winemaking methods and styles at the winery.

Traditions, Processions and the Stage

The Festa de Sant Antoni takes place on 17 January; its tradition has been documented in Gandesa since 1801. It includes the traditional collection of firewood by the people of Gandesa, followed by an auction together with Coca and Rodot de Sant Antoni.

The Romeria a la Fontcalda takes place on the first Sunday in May. The procession leaves the church at 7 a.m. and heads to the sanctuary.

During processions, the figures En Gori and la Fontcalda of the Gegants de Gandesa always appear accompanied by the “Etzimbori” grallers group from Gandesa.

The theatre group La Farsa commemorates the historical event of 17 October 1319, known as the Farsa de Gandesa. La Farsa has staged street performances and puppet theatre activities.

El Panilló is a tradition from Gandesa celebrated on All Saints’ Day. The different dates and forms of events therefore range from a fixed day in January through May to the All Saints’ celebration and the wine weekend in November.

Remembrance of the Battle of the Ebro

The CEBE collection presents weapons, ammunition, uniforms and personal belongings from the material and documentary holdings of the Centre d'Estudis de la Batalla de l'Ebre.

The Centre d’Estudis de la Batalla de l’Ebre was founded on the initiative of a group of scholars and collectors from Gandesa who were interested in the Battle of the Ebro and in preserving documentary, military and cultural materials.

Nature at Fontcalda

At the Santuario de La Fontcalda, the Canaletes River narrows into a small gorge where ponds and natural pools form. At the end of this section of the gorge, there is a thermal spring with a temperature of 25°C.
