Discover Ulldecona: UNESCO Rock Art, Border Castle and Nature Trails

Since 1998, the Abrics de l'Ermita in the Serra de Godall of Ulldecona have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The inscription therefore refers to a clearly defined site in the Serra de Godall, not merely to the municipality of Ulldecona as a whole. The Castell d’Ulldecona lies on a hill in the Serra Grossa on the left bank of the Sénia River and is a border castle. Its location connects the fortified site with the Serra Grossa and the Sénia River. The fortified complex comprises two towers. Inside a surrounding curtain wall, there is also the former church. As a former place of worship, the church is therefore part of the built heritage within the fortification.

Nature

Ulldecona’s nature trails are intended for walks. Cycling tours are also among the intended uses. Outings with the family are also provided for. The paths lead through mountain, river and landscape areas. As a result, the routes mentioned are not limited to a single landscape type, but connect mountainous areas with river environments and other landscape areas.

Paths and Circular Routes

The Camí Fluvial follows old paths that once connected the river with villages, mills and fields. Its route passes through riverside forests and Mediterranean rambla sections. Cultivated areas with olive, almond and carob trees are also part of this route. The path thus preserves the connection between several landscape elements: the former links between the river, villages, mills and fields stand alongside riverside woodland, rambla and the cultivated areas mentioned.

A circular route crosses the plain of Foia d’Ulldecona. It leads to three natural ponds: la de l’Ermita, la de les Ventalles and la del Montsià. Each of these ponds has its own biodiversity, with native flora and fauna. The three ponds are named individually and are not described as one continuous body of water. The circular route therefore includes both the plain of Foia d’Ulldecona and the three different pond sites, each with its own biodiversity.
