Aiguamúrcia: Monastery, Wine and Paths along the Gaià
Aiguamúrcia is a small village on the banks of the Gaià. The Reial Monestir de Santes Creus was founded in 1160 on the Gaià River and was the centre of an influential monastic feudal estate until 1835. Today’s centre of Aiguamúrcia developed around medieval buildings by the river.
Culture and Local History
The monastery’s 14th-century cloister is considered the first Gothic cloister of the Crown of Aragon. The Romanesque castle of L’Albà in Aiguamúrcia is also designated as a cultural asset of national interest. The cooperative winery in Aiguamúrcia is a Modernist building designed by the architect Cèsar Martinell. At the entrance to Santes Creus there is also a winery designed by Cèsar Martinell.
The Les Planes area, a high plateau on the banks of the Gaià between Alió, Vila-rodona, Aiguamúrcia, El Pont d’Armentera and Pla de Santa Maria, has a high density of dry-stone structures. The dry-stone constructions there use stone without cement or mortar. The abandoned village of Selma is noted for its historically valuable remains. The building of Sant Cristòfol de Selma is now abandoned and partly derelict.
Sant Miquel del Pla de Manlleu is a small Romanesque chapel and is designated as a local cultural asset of particular interest. Les Pobles is another locality included in the available destinations.
Nature
The Albereda de Santes Creus is a 12-hectare natural area designated by the Generalitat as a natural site of particular interest. Two monumental cypress trees stand in the Palau de l’Abat in Santes Creus, Aiguamúrcia.
Paths
Aiguamúrcia has a public network of more than 200 kilometres of paths. Hiking routes pass through the villages, farmhouses and castles of the municipality. A forest path leads from the small settlement of El Pla De Manlleu to the Sant Miquel chapel.

Wine and Events
VITIS Aiguamúrcia is a recurring food and wine event; the fourth edition included a tasting fair featuring wines, cavas, cheese, cured meats, as well as carob and nut products. The 2025 edition of VITIS Aiguamúrcia focused on wine culture, local heritage and artistic creativity and was scheduled for 7 to 9 November 2025.
The Mostra de gastronomia i vins d’alçada takes place in El Pla De Manlleu on a Saturday afternoon in July. The Aplec de Sant Miquel takes place at the Sant Miquel hermitage in Pla de Manlleu on a Sunday in May. As part of the fourth edition of VITIS Aiguamúrcia, theatrical and legend-themed guided tours took place at the Reial Monestir de Santes Creus.
Getting Around
The Santes Creus tourist office takes reservations and provides information about attractions in the Alt Camp region and along the Ruta del Cister. On the GR175, the Ruta del Cister, there is a checkpoint in Santes Creus in front of the former Pere-el-Gan hostel.
