Discover Salomó: Culture, Nature and History

The Gaià River forms spectacular meanders in the Salomó area between forests and mountains. The paths and trails around Salomó are particularly recommended for hikers. The Ball del Sant Crist is a local legend presented in the theatrical form of a spoken dance performance; such a performance can probably be dated back to the first half of the 18th century.

Culture

Cal Cadernal is a Renaissance building on Carrer de Josep Nin in Salomó. The building includes a square tower, documented since the 17th century, with a hipped roof. Cal Cadernal belonged to the Nin family, a family of knights that wielded great influence and power in the 17th century.

The original portal and windows of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Salomó, as well as several ornamental elements on the entrance façade, have been preserved. Its bell tower is a slender, polygonal Baroque structure with two storeys. A Romanesque relief at Santa Maria depicts a castle flanked by lances and two Maltese crosses inscribed in circles.

The Chapel of Sant Crist has a Greek-cross floor plan. It is covered by a hemispherical dome, a drum and a lantern. Salomó offers a guided heritage tour that includes the Chapel of Sant Crist and the Casa Pairal de Cal Cadernal. The tour explains the chapel’s artistic and sculptural richness.

The Cova del Vergerars, also known as Cova Fonda, contains finds made of stone, bone, metal and ceramic. These finds are dated to the third and second millennia BC. The main building of La Polla-rossa has a semicircular-arched portal with voussoirs; the keystone is engraved with the year 1596. The main building of Mas Boronat also has a large semicircular-arched portal with voussoirs, along with the year 1674.

Salomó’s town hall and former school building was constructed according to a project designed by Cèsar Martinell in 1924. The execution differed from the original design, and the building was inaugurated in 1926.

Nature

The river, forest and mountain landscapes of Salomó are home to a wide variety of plant communities and animal species. The Ruta Saludable is approximately 4 km long and runs through the municipality of Salomó. It is a figure-eight loop trail that starts in Salomó.

Geographical location

From inland areas, Salomó can be reached via the C-51 or the AP-2. From the coast, the N-340 or the AP-7 lead to Salomó. The town has a railway station and bus services.
