History

The first written mention of Renau dates from 1161. The remains of the former Castell de Renau were demolished in 1876 to create the church square. In Renau, the term “Castell” is to be understood more in the sense of a manor house than a feudal castle.

Culture

The Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Loreto was built at the end of the 17th century and decorated and renovated in 1930 by the architect Josep M. Jujol. The parish church of Santa Llúcia was built in 1769. It contains a Gothic carved figure of the Mare de Déu del Loreto from the 16th century.

Renau’s Festa Major d'estiu is a votive festival in honour of the patron saint Santa Llúcia and takes place on the third Sunday in July. Renau’s Festa Major d'hivern takes place on 10 December or the nearest Sunday in honour of the Verge del Loreto.

Trails

The Ruta dels Masos is a signposted trail of the Consell Comarcal del Tarragonès that connects various farmhouses in the area around Renau and Vilabella. The GR 172 passes through the municipality of Renau and takes hikers from Renau to the Cistercian monastery of Santes Creus. Renau lies along the first stage of the Camí de Sant Jaume.

The Itinerari Saludable around Renau is signposted throughout and has information boards along the entire route. The Itinerari Saludable i Parc de salut a Renau can be completed on foot or by mountain bike; the return route is rather narrow in some places for bicycles. Next to the Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Lloret there is a Parc de Salut where various health-promoting habits are explained.
