Discover La Canonja: Prehistory, Culture and Beaches
Prehistory and Archaeology
La Canonja reaches far back into prehistory. Mammuthus displays original fossils of the fauna found during the excavation, as well as stone tools. Among the notable finds are mammoth tusks discovered in 2007. Another focal point is the Barranc de la Boella site. Excavations brought to light remains of mammoths, hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, deer, horses and various predators. Flint tools were also found. The Barranc de la Boella archaeological complex is considered important for understanding the first human populations in Camp de Tarragona.
The finds bring together individual animal species, tools and a specific archaeological site to provide a broad view of early human history. Current opening hours for Mammuthus and other facilities should be checked before travelling.
Culture and Historic Sites
Castell de Masricart brings together several public functions in one place: it houses the public library, local collections, the municipal archive and an exhibition space. It also has rooms for events and multipurpose use. Nearby La Canonja are the Castell Del Comte De Sicart castle and the “Tarragona, Late Roman Necropolis” museum.
Other historic destinations are located around La Canonja. These include the ancient Villa-mausoleo de Centcelles site and the ancient Forum Romà Tarragona site. Together with Barranc de la Boella, the chronological span extends from prehistoric finds to ancient settings. In this way, the castle, museum, ancient sites and archaeological site each represent different historical themes.
