Vila-Seca De Solcina: Culture, Nature and Activities
The Castell de Vila-seca has been documented since the 12th century. General admission includes a visit to the castle and the temporary exhibition, meaning that the historic building and the changing presentation form part of a single visit.
Another local destination is La Pineda.
Culture and History
The Museu del Celler uses interactive elements to explain the winemaking process in Vila-seca, from the grape harvest to consumption. The chronological sequence therefore spans the period from the beginning of work in viticulture to its finished product. The history of the museum and the production process are presented within a shared thematic context. The museum also conveys the history of the cooperative movement. This presentation is housed in a fully restored building in the Noucentisme style, whose architecture forms a separate part of the museum visit. Thus, the Museu del Celler presents both the development of winemaking and the history of communal organisation.
The Església de Sant Esteve features both Renaissance and Gothic characteristics. Construction of this church began between 1559 and 1576. At the end of 2010, the Cós de Sant Antoni de Vila-seca was recognised by the Government of Catalonia as heritage of national interest in the category of festive cultural heritage. The church and the Cós therefore represent two further historical reference points within the history of the locality.
Nature and Circular Walk
The Séquia Major is a small area within Catalonia's PEIN. It includes remnants of former wetlands and two floodable areas. Populations of the Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) and the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) are found in the Séquia Major. The landscape there combines the preserved traces of the former wetlands with the aforementioned floodable areas and the two documented animal populations.
A visit to the Séquia Major includes an approximately two-kilometre circular walk that takes about two hours. Thus, in addition to the natural area itself, a clearly defined circular route is described as part of the visit.
Activities and Routes
The Parc de la Torre d’en Dolça is home to the Vila-seca Pump Track. It is used for cycling, skating and other sports activities. The pump track has separate areas for beginners and for riding at a higher level of difficulty. The facility therefore combines various forms of activity with an explicit separation of the stated difficulty levels.
The Raval de la Mar running circuit connects Vila-seca with La Pineda Platja. Its route therefore establishes a connection between the town and La Pineda Platja.
Other Buildings
At the entrance to the Parc de la Torre d'en Dolça stands the Piló del Rescat, a stone monolith. It is located opposite the Santuario de la Verge de la Pineda.
The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de La Pineda was built around the second half of the 13th century. The sanctuary preserves an image of the Virgin Mary attributed to the second half of the 14th century. A medieval defensive tower has also been preserved there. The sanctuary therefore retains both its approximately dated origin and the attributed image and defensive tower.
