La Pineda – Beach, Natural Areas and Culture

La Pineda brings together the coast, a wetland, a city park and culture within a compact thematic area. The more than three-kilometre-long beach has fine, golden sand. The water is calm and clear, and the beach has a very gentle slope. In addition, a new promenade with paths for pedestrians and cyclists, wooden walkways and seating areas runs along the coast.

Coast and Promenade

La Pineda beach and promenade have been adapted for people with reduced mobility and are accessible. Several step-free access points lead from the Paseo to the sand and all the way to the water's edge. There are also reserved parking spaces, pedestrian crossings and an amphibious beach wheelchair. The individual facilities are distributed across access to the beach, time spent on the beach and the route to the water's edge.

The promenade connects different forms of movement and recreation without reducing the character of the coast to a single section. For travel planning, current conditions on routes and local information about the available facilities can also be checked before departure.

Natural Area

The Séquia Major is a coastal wetland in La Pineda that has been protected since 1993 under the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural de Catalunya. Advance registration is required for visits. The meeting point is at the main entrance on Plaça de la Cançó Catalana in La Pineda.

The annual visits include a circular route of approximately two kilometres lasting around two hours. During the tour, the history and natural assets of the coastal wetland are explained, animal tracks are interpreted, and birds and protected species are observed. Before visiting, current dates and applicable starting times should be checked, as the announced visiting opportunities are tied to specific dates and schedules.

Opposite La Pineda beach lies Parc del Pinar de Perruquet, a 2.5-hectare city park. Alongside the beach, promenade and protected wetland, the townscape therefore also includes a city park as a distinct landscape area.

History and Culture

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de La Pineda was built around the second half of the 13th century. Restoration and extension work at the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de La Pineda was carried out from 1712 to 1758. The construction period and subsequent work belong to different phases in the history of the sanctuary.

South of La Pineda beach stands the Marca d’Aigua sculpture group. It honours the writer and poet Carles Barral. Part of the sculpture group is located on a restored bunker-fort from the Spanish Civil War. This ensemble brings together literary remembrance and the memory of the Civil War.
