L'Albiol: Mountain Views, Castle and Historic Paths

On clear days, the view from the summit of L'Albiol stretches as far as Montserrat, the Ebro Delta and Mallorca. Across the Camp de Tarragona, it extends from Torredembarra to l'Hospitalet. The town lies on the GR65-5, also known as the Way of Saint James (Camino de Sant Jaume).

Geographical Setting

The municipality of l'Albiol is geographically part of the Muntanyes de Prades mountain range. From the C-14, a winding road leads for approximately 11 kilometres to L'Albiol.

Nature and Trails

The PR-C 20 short-distance hiking trail runs through the municipality. It connects the town of l'Albiol with the GR 171 at the level of the dels Cogullons mountain refuge in the Muntanyes de Prades. L'Albiol has networks of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and climbing is possible on the rock faces.

The area around L'Albiol is surrounded by pine, holm oak and oak forests, where local mushroom species can be found.

The “Muntanyencs amb vistes al mar” hike begins in L'Albiol and follows the Grauet, an old connecting path to La Mussara whose paving has partly survived. The hike includes a visit to Mas de Nebot, which dates from before the 15th century. The route also leads to the remains of the Font Major ice pit from the 17th century.

Culture and History

Sections of wall, partially collapsed towers and the central buildings remain from L'Albiol Castle. The wall of L'Albiol Castle has four square flanking towers and a round tower. The castle is associated with a fortress belonging to the first defensive ring around what was then Xibrana, now Siurana, on the edge of al-Andalus.

The parish church of Sant Miquel is a single-nave building with side chapels and a square bell tower. The present parish church of Sant Miquel was begun in 1789 and consecrated in 1791; the year 1791 is displayed on its façade.

Villa Urrutia in Les Masies Catalanes represents Modernist architecture and has landscaped grounds and a slender round tower. In the Vall del Rescàs, divided between l'Albiol and Alcover, stands the Ermita de les Virtuts, a ruined religious building; the surviving structure dates from a reconstruction in 1442.

In September, L'Albiol celebrates the Festa Major in honour of Sant Miquel.
