Susqueda between Reservoir, Mountain Trails and Cultural Heritage

In Susqueda, Castell de Fornils, a cultural asset of national interest (BCIN), stands at an altitude of 582 metres beside the Riera d’Om and at the foot of the Far cliff. A signposted trail leads from Sant Martí Sacalm to the foot of Castell de Fornils.

Culture and History

The Mare de Déu del Coll Sanctuary is located at a mountain pass. This pass connects the Sant Benet and Sant Gregori massifs. At the same time, it forms the boundary between the municipal areas of Susqueda and Osor; the entire complex belongs to the municipality of Susqueda.

The Mare de Déu del Far Sanctuary can be reached on foot from Sant Martí Sacalm and from the Susqueda Reservoir. The PR222 is a signposted trail that follows the historic route from Sant Benet to El Far.

Landscape and History

The Far cliff stands at an altitude of 1,123 metres and marks the boundary between Les Guilleries, Collsacabra and Vall d’Hostoles. The Susqueda Reservoir lies in a wooded, mountainous landscape.

Construction of the Susqueda Reservoir began in 1963 and was completed in 1967. The village of Susqueda, as well as the land and farmsteads in the valleys of Susqueda and Querós, were flooded as a result.

The Susqueda Dam is a double-curvature concrete arch dam with internal galleries. The Sala de les Columnes is one of these internal galleries.

Access to the Reservoir

The Susqueda Reservoir can be reached via a signposted turn-off from the C-63 near Pasteral. An asphalt track then continues to the reservoir. A forest track leads from Sant Martí Sacalm to the Susqueda Reservoir.

The route from Sant Martí Sacalm to the Susqueda Reservoir is a forest track. Four-wheel-drive vehicles or pick-ups are recommended for this route. The Susqueda Reservoir is not navigable by motor-powered boats.
